Self-Organised Learning Environment (SOLEs) in an English School : an example of transformative pedagogy?

Self-Organised Learning Environment (SOLEs) in an English School : an example of transformative pedagogy? | [New] Media Art Education & Research | Scoop.it

The SOLE concept, although flexible, has the potential to offer a divergent, radical transformative pedagogy. This sits somewhat uncomfortably alongside more convergent approaches which position the learner as subservient to the curriculum, with the task of merely mastering subject matter prescribed by the teacher. However, what is notable from this analysis is that transformative pedagogy seems to be positioned alongside, rather than in conflict with, the dominant educational framework.

21st Cent. Learners's curator insight, November 3, 2013 5:40 AM

I'm torn by this. I'm sure that children come back with lots of information from the net, but how well is this translated into deeper understandings? Skillfully facilitated plenaries must be crucial.  Maybe a juxtaposition of this with Hattie's findings on the key features of effective teaching would be interesting?  I'd love to see SOLEs in action.

High Security Borders

High Security Borders | [New] Media Art Education & Research | Scoop.it
Accelerated through the fear from the attacks of 9/11 and all what followed, the so called ‘Western Society’ is constructing the greatest wall ever build on this planet. On different building sites on all five inhabitable continents, walls, fences and high-tech border surveillance are under construction in order to secure the citizens and their high quality of life within this system. The fall of the Berlin Wall was described as the historical moment that marks the demolition of world’s last barrier between nation states. Yet it took the European Union only six years to create with the Schengen Agreement in 1995 a new division only 80km offset to the east of Berlin.

Seth Dixon's insight:

This map shows that hi-tech political surveillance of borders is highly correlated with the core areas of the global economy and some of the most attractive immigrant destinations.

Questions to Ponder: What else do you see in this map?  What does this say about the world order?  Are there patterns that this map reveals/conceals?

new world wall

Miles Gibson's curator insight, February 13, 11:04 AM

Unit 4 political geography

This article explains how the world is filled with division and segregation. Some of the most notable are the walls are the wall in berlin, the wall/border/river/fence between the u.s. and mexico and the border between north and south Korea is the most notable walls.

This article relates to unit 4 because it shows how people, through borders, have divided them through history creating new politics, culture and borders themselves. The political processes involved can change the policies and shapes of nations in the world.

Deep Lab documentary & book (2014) - by The STUDIO at CMU - #feminism

Deep Lab is a congress of cyberfeminist researchers, organized by STUDIO Fellow Addie Wagenknecht to examine how the themes of privacy, security, surveillance, anonymity, and large-scale data aggregation are problematized in the arts, culture and society. During the second week of December 2014, the Deep Lab participants—a group of internationally acclaimed new-media artists, information designers, data scientists, software engineers, hackers, writers, journalists and theoreticians—gathered to engage in critical assessments of contemporary digital culture. They worked collaboratively at the STUDIO in an accelerated pressure project, blending aspects of a hackathon, charrette, and a micro-conference.

internet art on FADWEBSITE - #netart | [New] Media Art Education & Research | Scoop.it

Web Art, or Internet Art, or Net Art, is art that is accessible to anyone with an internet connection (and a right browser). Net art can roughly be described as a website that is an art work in itself. Like other digital art Net Art is transient – it exist only while the technology, software, and code are compatible. Net Art must also be constantly supported and unkept otherwise it will disappear, many examples of Net Art no longer exist because the domain name expired. So this week I will be sharing my 5 favourite examples of Net Art, that will hopefully still be around as this is published.

Curating on the Web online Course

Curating on the Web online Course | [New] Media Art Education & Research | Scoop.it
Monika Fleischmann's insight:
Curating on the Web: Exhibiting Internet-based Art

with Tina Mariane Krogh Madsen

Since its beginning, the internet has been used for practices that take the web as an artistic medium in itself. In that sense, Internet art is a site-specific art form, dependent on its being online – and connected to other entities in the network.

This Course gives you an insight into the processes and methods of curating ephemeral, internet-based art and the challenges these can pose to you as curator. It introduces the platforms and websites where these exhibitions are shown, in both institutional as well as independent contexts.

The Course aims to give you theoretical and practical tools to curate the web, how to manage your curatorial projects as well as how to launch your online exhibition. It also touches upon how to document your exhibition and artworks for archival use and how to promote it. Included in the ourse is a practical assignment, where the participants conceptualize and develop an internet-based curatorial proposal and are given feedback and advice for future project development.

Live video-conferences every Tuesday at 7pm (Central European Time). Recordings will be available in case you miss a live session!

Calling all artists, food scientists, designers, chefs, poets, dancers and musicians. Science Gallery London are hungry for your ideas for installations, events and activities for our FOOD season.

Everyone knows we live with a broken food system that means one billion people are malnourished and two billion are overweight. But we're interested in hearing some of the good news rather than the bad. Are you an expert on the increasing importance of insects in our kitchens? Have you been working on turning fermentation into an artform? Are you adept at crafting multi-sensory dinners that taste like Iceland’s volcanoes? Have you been thinking creatively about Gandhi's research on nutrition? Or do you want to make medicinal ice-cream out of our local herb gardens?

EGO – interactive installation by Klaus Obermaier with Stefano D'Alessio & Martina Menegon (2015) #mediaart

The interactive installation EGO re-stages and reverses the process of alienation by enhancing and deforming the mirror image by the movements of the users.

Although an abstraction, it quickly becomes the self and reestablishes the tension between the real and the symbolic, the Ego and the It, the subject and the object.

Carsten Nicolai – A little grid more (interview) - #mediaart

Carsten Nicolai is one of the most renowned artists working at the intersection of art and science and infamous for his minimalist approach.

Having exhibited internationally at Documenta X and the Venice Biennale, he is also an active musician working under his music alias Alva Noto and has staged performances with Ryuichi Sakamoto at the Guggenheim NY to the Centre Pompidou in Paris. This week, Gestalten is releasing his new book Grid Index, the first comprehensive visual lexicon of patterns and grid systems. A reference book for designers, visual artists, architects, researchers, musicians and mathematicians,

Nicolai has discovered and unlocked the visual code for visual systems into a systematic equation of grids and patterns. We met Carsten in his studio in Berlin Mitte to talk about art, grids, books and the graphical language of music.
