The complete records of this investigation can be found at cms.mit.edu/research/theses.php and present the reader with an elaborate discussion of the key players, institutions and discourses on aesthetics, economics and exhibition methodologies that characterize Internet art's relation with the traditional institutions for contemporary art. The sociological analysis of the past and current situation aims to offer a solid ground for extrapolations and predictions for Internet art's future as an art world, and its relation to the traditional art institutions. An essay based on this research is scheduled to be published in February 2008 in "The Weight of photography" (tentative title).

Note: All texts were proofread by the respective interviewees and are published with their consent.

EGO – interactive installation by Klaus Obermaier with Stefano D'Alessio & Martina Menegon (2015) #mediaart

The interactive installation EGO re-stages and reverses the process of alienation by enhancing and deforming the mirror image by the movements of the users.

Although an abstraction, it quickly becomes the self and reestablishes the tension between the real and the symbolic, the Ego and the It, the subject and the object.

Symphonie Cinétique - The Poetry of Motion (Joachim Sauter & Ólafur Arnalds) by Matthias Maercks #mediaart #lightart

We are honored to present the project film of Symphonie Cinétique - The Poetry of Motion.

This film presents the wonderful journey that media artist Joachim Sauter (ART+COM) and composer Ólafur Arnalds ventured on together at MADE, that culminated with the creation and performance of this interdisciplinary Gesamtkunstwerk.

The dialogue and exchange between these two craftsmen, each coming from a distinctly different discipline, resulted in a majestic clash of light, motion and sound.

Please dive in, let go and enjoy this wonderful moment - Joachim's graceful kinetic pieces breathing and moving in harmony with the touching music composed by Olafur.

About MADE

MADE is a creative platform for artists from various fields, located in the heart of Berlin.

It can be a gallery, a workspace, a studio, a stage, a laboratory, or a performance space – but most of all, it is a venue for interdisciplinary projects that invites artists to step out of their artistic routines.

The goal of MADE is to enable a new kind of creative work by bringing together different artistic fields and offering a workspace and an inspiring biotope that allows new things to happen.

MADE was founded in early 2010 by German contemporary artist tadiROCK, her partner Nico Zeh and ABSOLUT Vodka, a visionary brand that fosters creative collaborations for over 30 years.

La Chambre Rouge par Julien Grosjean - #soundart #mediaart

(English below )
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

The room is red and the door open. There are traces of passage.
Voices are sounding from outside while i am here. I’m turning, between memory and oblivion.

La Chambre Rouge is an installation that perceives, records, emits and transforms words gathered from here and there.
It is a sensitive experience and an objet issued from the reflexion about the subjects of time, memory, forgetting and identity.
Words, extracts from interviews, are played and progressively erased by the device, to wich is also connected a
microphone that records permanently , inviting an audience to share its presence.

By its fragmented appearence and the coexistence of two differents tapes’ loop that are recording the same exterior information, but reproducing them differently, the installation symbolically evoke the internal coexistence of different memories ( conscious, unconscious, corporal, emotionnal) and their different relation to time, alteration and oblivion.

Carsten Nicolai – A little grid more (interview) - #mediaart

Carsten Nicolai is one of the most renowned artists working at the intersection of art and science and infamous for his minimalist approach.

Having exhibited internationally at Documenta X and the Venice Biennale, he is also an active musician working under his music alias Alva Noto and has staged performances with Ryuichi Sakamoto at the Guggenheim NY to the Centre Pompidou in Paris. This week, Gestalten is releasing his new book Grid Index, the first comprehensive visual lexicon of patterns and grid systems. A reference book for designers, visual artists, architects, researchers, musicians and mathematicians,

Nicolai has discovered and unlocked the visual code for visual systems into a systematic equation of grids and patterns. We met Carsten in his studio in Berlin Mitte to talk about art, grids, books and the graphical language of music.

Software Takes Command (volume 5) - Lev Manovich... ebook to read online

Software has replaced a diverse array of physical, mechanical, and electronic technologies used before 21st century to create, store, distribute and interact with cultural artifacts. It has become our interface to the world, to others, to our memory and our imagination - a universal language through which the world speaks, and a universal engine on which the world runs. What electricity and combustion engine were to the early 20th century, software is to the early 21st century. Offering the the first theoretical and historical account of software for media authoring and its effects on the practice and the very concept of 'media,' the author of The Language of New Media (2001) develops his own theory for this rapidly-growing, always-changing field.
