I am fascinated by Papert's perception of educators as anthropologists, "using dynamic cultural trends as a medium to carry educational interventions." How then will the face of education change within global communities? This intriguing book review, originally scooped by Dennis O'Connor, prompted me to order my own copy. I think the early insights expressed by Papert continue to shine light on teaching and learning in the 21st century.
The intersection of mathematical thinking and communication skills creates enormous potential for teaching and learning. I have noticed the ability of some students to program themselves to correct answers with math apps. Isn’t it equally important that these students are able to use the language of mathematics to communicate the pathway to an answer? I have also noticed how much I learn during a “math Talk” about what these students know and don’t know about a mathematical concept. I share Toliver’s sentiment in this statement: “I tell my students that I don't mind them giving me a wrong answer, but I do mind when they don't speak up with any answer at all.
