How Americans Value Public Libraries in Their Communities

How Americans Value Public Libraries in Their Communities | Libraries of the Future | Scoop.it

54% of Americans have used a public library in the past year, and 72% live in a “library household.” Most say libraries are very important to their communities, both for providing access to materials and resources and for promoting literacy and improving the overall quality of life. Most Americans say they have only had positive experiences at public libraries, and value a range of library resources and services.

The global rise of the super library

The global rise of the super library | Libraries of the Future | Scoop.it

Biblioteca Vasconcelos, Seattle Central, Kanazawa Umimirai, Spijkenisse and Birmingham super-libraries explored (Crack open the Borges. Five non-imaginary libraries to ignite flights of fancy.) As the £189m Library of Birmingham opens its doors, it joins a new breed of international "super library". Architecture, design and technology are changing the way the library functions as a space. They have evolved to reflect modern attitudes to books, and how people consume the written word. With The Culture Show architecture critic Tom Dyckhoff, BBC Arts explores five of the world's most impressive public libraries.

wildswans's insight:

Absolutely love the "book hill". What fasinates me is how relationships between the outside space and inside space is interpreted. A book opens up a whole new world - therefore the inside is bigger than the ouside. And perhaps, interior physical spaces should also create that kind of expansive feeling, which draws people in.

This is an interesting article. I particularly like how library cards in Denmarks can also be used to access health services.
wildswans's comment, September 17, 2013 10:17 PM
Indeed. We had a conversation with the the Danish librarian and what's amazing is the level of trust - trust in the people which enabled them to expand their service hours beyond staff working hours.
nickcarman's comment, September 17, 2013 10:21 PM
I think that is just good management. From my experience, a good manager treats his or her staff like adults and trusts them to get on with the job. This isn't always the case unfortunately!

wildswans's insight:

I have nagging suspicion that this is still not quite the model for the library of the future - it almost seems exclusive rather than inspiring. If all you wanted was a space to engage in digital activities, you really don't need a library. A library is also about discovery and come of these spaces don't seem to do that as much - they are are really just a nice free space, which is of course important but it should not be all there is.

nickcarman's curator insight, June 27, 2013 6:54 PM

These libraries do look really exciting, although I find it a little sad that they are forced to choose between a library with books, or a library with tech.

Nevermore Sithole's curator insight, August 29, 2013 8:12 AM

Free spaces in libraries are a new feature in both public and academic libraries and they enhance client interaction and networking which is also vital in modern libraries. For example Information Commons.

Library director Brian Gambles talks about moving from a transactional approach to a transformational one; i.e. not just issuing books, but performing research, help set up a business etc. This is something that all public libraries need to do.

The article discusses how more mega-libraries like these are being built while branch libraries are being shut in the UK. Will people be prepared to commute across town to visit when their local branch closes?
