We look up to other people in all aspects of our lives. Most of us admire our parents or an older sibling. We desire to be like those who have “made it” like actors, musicians, or wealthy business owners.

From the post: "A group of academics create the top 40 of stories based on how popular they have been online, primarily through social media sharing and viewing. For anyone who thinks such an approach means the UK’s most popular news story is a skating cat, it’s time to think again."

The rise of the mobile editor

The rise of the mobile editor | New Journalism | Scoop.it

As the number of mobile readers climbs over 50 percent for many newspapers, it is logical that we would infuse mobile thinking throughout the newsroom. Yet, in a majority of newsrooms, the focus is not on mobile. Newsrooms need to start changing this by hiring a mobile editor.

This is How Press Photos Were Transmitted Back in the 1970s

This is How Press Photos Were Transmitted Back in the 1970s | New Journalism | Scoop.it

In our world of digital photography and high speed Internet, photojournalists can quickly and easily send large numbers of high-res photos to the other side of the globe. Things weren’t always so convenient.

The video above shows what a photo transmitter looked like back in the 1970s. What you see is a United Press International UPI Model 16-S, which scanned photos and then transmitted them using a telephone line.

In a 2012 blog post for The Dallas Morning News, photo director Chris Wilkins offers a glimpse into how the UPI 16-S worked.

News Sites Are Fatter and Slower Than Ever

News Sites Are Fatter and Slower Than Ever | New Journalism | Scoop.it

An analysis of download times highlights how poorly designed news sites are. That's more evidence of poor implementation of ads... and a strong case for ad blockers. Websites designers live in a bubble, they’re increasingly disconnected from users. Their work requirements include design (fonts, layouts elements), advertising (multiple ad serving and analytics), data collection (even though most sites collects way more data that they are able to process), a/b testings, and other marketing voodoo.
