Announcing the 2011 Mashable Awards Finalists | New Digital Media | Scoop.it

The 2011 Mashable Awards will honor nominees and winners in 28 categories, covering four of Mashable‘s core content areas: Social Media, Tech, Business and Entertainment.

Augmented Reality goes stellar in Germany GoMo News

Augmented Reality goes stellar in Germany GoMo News | New Digital Media | Scoop.it

The September 1st [2011] edition of the leading German news magazine, Stern, not only devotes a large section to discussing augmented reality (AR), but also uses the technology to enhance the whole issue. Readers can get a demo of AR in action by downloading a dedicated app labelled Stern AR. The September issue contains custom symbols printed on a number of pages. This is something of a coup for Metaio, whose Junaio AR browser app provides the basis for this technology. Here at GoMo News we’ve been investigating producing channels for the Junaio app ourselves. What Stern has done is to simplify the whole procedure. You don’t need to download the AR browser separately and then add a Stern ‘channel’. You can download the Stern AR app from either the iTunes App Store or the Android Market. We tried the app out using an App iPhone 3GS. Running the app an pointing the handset’s camera at the symbols, triggers enhancements which can then be viewed through the iPhone’s screen.

The Guardian Crowdsourcing Newslists So Readers Can Help Them Make News

The Guardian Crowdsourcing Newslists So Readers Can Help Them Make News | New Digital Media | Scoop.it

This post was written by Dan Roberts, National News Director for The Guardian UK

Curated by JanLGordon covering "Content Curation, Social Media & Beyond"

This is a large up step in use of crowdsourcing for a major news organization and will surely be followed by others if it works.

Excerpt:

The newsdesk at the Guardian is planning an experiment in opening its doors.

**The idea is to publish a carefully-selected portion of the national, international and business newslists on a daily blog, which will launch on Monday morning, and encourage people to get in touch with reporters and editors via Twitter if they have ideas.

Obviously, we're not planning to list all our exclusives or embargoed content and we'll also have to be careful not to say anything legally sensitive or unsubstantiated.

**Nonetheless, we think there are lots of routine things that we list every day which might provoke interesting responses from readers: everything from upcoming press conferences, to stories we need help uncovering.

Is the future of gaming in the cloud? | New Digital Media | Scoop.it

"Being a games developer it comes as no surprise that I’m interested in computer games and gadgets. My obsession started back in the 80’s with a Sinclair +2 Spectrum (yes, I am that old)..."

"...Can a cheap, affordable console that plays all the latest games and never needs upgrading exist? I’m quietly confident, but maybe I’ve just got my head in the cloud"
