Why Can't All Map Apps Be This Clever?

Why Can't All Map Apps Be This Clever? | New Digital Media | Scoop.it

Augmented Reality has mostly found its niche as a way to bring virtual characters to life through a mobile device. But a Japanese developer has found a more clever use. Crossfader's AR-MAPS app syncs Apple or Google Maps to a live video feed from your iPhone's camera, so you can visualize how you're oriented, and easily locate destinations.

Using the device's GPS, compass, and gyroscope, the app automatically switches between a split-screen map/video view of your surroundings, or just a flat map depending on if you're holding your device vertically or horizontally. And not only does it let you search for a specific address or landmark, it uses augmented reality to overlay markers on the video feed so all you need to do is spin around until it highlights your destination. And best of all, it's currently available free of charge on the iTunes App Store, providing yet another alternative to Apple's Maps offering.

Augmented Reality combined with mobile technology is really starting to show what is capable. Expect to see more and more impressive uses of the technology.

Apple Games Converge With Android Using HTML 5 as IPad Rejects Flash: Tech

Pity the programmer. The path used to be so clear. After coming up with the next billion-dollar software idea, the only decision left was whether to build it for just Microsoft Corp. (MSFT)’s Windows or Apple Inc. (AAPL)’s Mac as well.
Now the options are far more diverse. Mobile platforms like Apple’s iOS, Google Inc. (GOOG)’s Android, and Windows Phone all vie for coders’ attention alongside desktop operating systems and Web hubs such as Facebook Inc. Each one requires time, and often a different skill set.
The challenge is particularly acute in video games, where iPhone users expect to be able to interact with their friends even if they’re using a different device. Michael Carter, a 27- year-old software engineer, says he has a solution in HTML 5, Bloomberg Businessweek reports in its Feb. 27 issue.

What Apple Got Right and Wrong with iCloud

What Apple Got Right and Wrong with iCloud | New Digital Media | Scoop.it

All the rumors and all the betas are over. Now we’re all using Apple’s iCloud. We’re syncing, we’re backing up, and (to certain extent) we’re streaming. Life is good… kind of.

For those of us who remember the debacle that was Apple’s launch of the now-replaced MobileMe. the initial iCloud launch is undoubtedly leagues ahead of the chaos and server failures that accompanied the arrival of Apple’s previous cloud service. iCloud seems to be more robust, but does it actually do what most of us want?

First, let’s take a quick look at the good parts of iCloud before moving onto the bad and the crazy…

Apple dominating Android with 84 percent of mobile gaming revenue

Apple dominating Android with 84 percent of mobile gaming revenue | New Digital Media | Scoop.it
There’s a reason why so many developers feels iOS users are more valuable than Android: Apple is killing it in mobile gaming with 84 percent of all mobile gaming revenue in the US.

“When analyzing Apple’s successful monetization, there is one dominant factor outside of differences in audience demographics and preferences: Apple requires users to connect their credit card information directly to their account, thus creating a seamless purchase experience,” said Newzoo chief executive Peter Warman in a statement.

Forrester: No Android Tablet Has More Than 5% Share vs iPad. How Does Amazon’s Kindle Fire Compare?

Forrester: No Android Tablet Has More Than 5% Share vs iPad. How Does Amazon’s Kindle Fire Compare? | New Digital Media | Scoop.it

On the eve of what may well be the launch of a brand new iPad from Apple comes some new analysis from Forrester Research on the current competitive landscape in tablets — or lack thereof, as the case seems to be.

In short: despite the rush of tablets that have come out in the past year, many built on Google’s Android OS, Apple has managed to continue to run away with the competition, and how has 73 percent of the tablet market. No Android tablet maker, it notes, has more than a five percent share against it.

There is a caveat to Forrester’s research, however.

Forrester carried out its market research last September, before Amazon had started to sell its Kindle Fire tablet, and before Barnes & Noble had released its own tablet to compete against that.

These devices have proven to be forces in the market, and are already having an impact on sales of another device in the food chain, e-readers.

Loytr Application Brings Facebook Timeline To IPad Users

Loytr Application Brings Facebook Timeline To IPad Users | New Digital Media | Scoop.it

Loytr, the maker of popular Facebook iPad application MyPad, turned its attention to the forthcoming profile upgrade with the release of its new app for the Apple tablet, Timelines for Facebook.

The app brings all of the elements of the timeline profile to users of the Apple tablet, and users can browse their timeline profiles, Facebook friend lists, news feeds, and friends’ timeline profiles, either randomly or in alphabetical order.

Timelines for Facebook is certainly attractive, and it may be one of the only ways to enjoy timeline before the sitewide rollout of the advanced profile.
And Loytr is certainly not a flash in the pan, as MyPad has been downloaded more than 25 million times and boasts over 2.5 million daily users.
