Social Networking: Google+ and the Long Game

Social Networking: Google+ and the Long Game | New Digital Media | Scoop.it

Sure, Google+ doesn't have anything close to the numbers Facebook boasts. But there's still plenty of value Google can wring from its social network and plenty of places in which it can grow, according to Google VP Vic Gundotra. Google+, he said, is a social layer that goes on top of everything else Google does, rather than an isolated destination.

Google+ chief Vic Gundotra sat down with Guy Kawasaki, cofounder of Alltop.com and founding partner at Garage Technology Ventures, at this year's SXSW convention. The topic at hand: how Google+ plans to remain afloat in the hotly competitive online social network space.

Facebook Smart Lists Automatically Group Friends With Shared Characteristics for Use With Privacy Settings

Facebook Smart Lists Automatically Group Friends With Shared Characteristics for Use With Privacy Settings | New Digital Media | Scoop.it

Facebook is currently testing a new feature called Smart Lists that automatically groups friends with common characteristics into Friend Lists that dynamically update themselves over time.

Previously, Friend Lists had to be manually assembled and updated — a chore that contributed to them being used by only 5% of the user base. First spotted by Nick Starr, Smart Lists are now being created for the coworkers, classmates, and friends who live within 50 miles of users in the test group.

►Mini Matmian:

Facebook 'Smart Lists' hey. Automatically grouping your contacts and dynamically updating them. Not sure I like this. Another privacy issue I feel. It's a pretty obvious tactic to combat Google+ cirlces but making taking it a step too far.

Facebook seem  more reactive than active these days. Bolting on things to match their competitors rather than creating new, innovative ways to communicate.

Is Google+ a Ghost Town? 5 Reasons That Will Change Your Mind

Is Google+ a Ghost Town? 5 Reasons That Will Change Your Mind | New Digital Media | Scoop.it
Google+ is getting flack for low average time on site numbers, but what do these truly symbolize? And do they really matter?

So with Google+’s new redesign and several articles that have appeared highlighting how Google+ is “dying,” maybe we should reflect on what Google+ is doing right, with perhaps the pundits looking at it through the wrong lens?

What if Google+ never needed to be Facebook, but rather exist as something more?

So you’re on Google+, and you think it’s a ghost town because your friends aren’t on it?

Well, what if I told you none of that mattered?

What if I told you, you could see what you really wanted to see; interact with what/who you really wanted to interact with; and group those interests and engagements into categories and subjects?

Well here’s five reasons how Google+ can make you forget that your friends aren’t here, while still being amazingly useful, interesting and engaging. It’s more than a social network.

Google+ Traffic Returns To Pre-Spike Levels - SocialTimes.com

Google+ Traffic Returns To Pre-Spike Levels - SocialTimes.com | New Digital Media | Scoop.it

Google Plus’ growth spurt, powered by opening the network to the public, was short-lived according to data analytics company Chitika.

Launched in late June, Google+ originally procured new members by invitation only.

On September 20, 2011, Google removed the sign-up restriction and usage spiked to more than 1200 percent.

Alas, the traffic has ebbed 60 percent of its maximum and is back to where it was prior to the social network becoming publicly available. “The data shows that, on the day of its public debut, Google+ traffic skyrocketed to peak levels. But, soon after, traffic fell by over 60% as it returned to its normal, underwhelming state. It would appear that although high levels of publicity were able to draw new traffic to Google+, few of them saw reason to stay,” Chitika data analyst Gabe Donnini wrote.
