Apple dominating Android with 84 percent of mobile gaming revenue

Apple dominating Android with 84 percent of mobile gaming revenue | New Digital Media | Scoop.it
There’s a reason why so many developers feels iOS users are more valuable than Android: Apple is killing it in mobile gaming with 84 percent of all mobile gaming revenue in the US.

“When analyzing Apple’s successful monetization, there is one dominant factor outside of differences in audience demographics and preferences: Apple requires users to connect their credit card information directly to their account, thus creating a seamless purchase experience,” said Newzoo chief executive Peter Warman in a statement.

Apple Games Converge With Android Using HTML 5 as IPad Rejects Flash: Tech

Pity the programmer. The path used to be so clear. After coming up with the next billion-dollar software idea, the only decision left was whether to build it for just Microsoft Corp. (MSFT)’s Windows or Apple Inc. (AAPL)’s Mac as well.
Now the options are far more diverse. Mobile platforms like Apple’s iOS, Google Inc. (GOOG)’s Android, and Windows Phone all vie for coders’ attention alongside desktop operating systems and Web hubs such as Facebook Inc. Each one requires time, and often a different skill set.
The challenge is particularly acute in video games, where iPhone users expect to be able to interact with their friends even if they’re using a different device. Michael Carter, a 27- year-old software engineer, says he has a solution in HTML 5, Bloomberg Businessweek reports in its Feb. 27 issue.

Tough week, fairytale ending at the DADIs

Tough week, fairytale ending at the DADIs | New Digital Media | Scoop.it

Matmi’s had an interesting experience this week and, in my opinion, we’re better off for it.

We got knocked back at three award presentations this week – and maybe we deserved it for getting a bit too big for our boots. 10 years in, most successful year yet, some great new clients and releases, nominations at The Webbys and Cannes Lions on our 1st attempts, blah blah. Had we started to believe our own publicity? Every marketing/PR person will tell you that’s a very dangerous thing, so I’m glad we were pulled up short.

It made winning Digital Agency of the Year at the DADI Awards last night very special indeed (yes, 4 award ceremonies in a week is a new one on us too). And to see Optathlon (United Airlines) pick up another win in the DADI’s Travel category was a fantastic pat-on-the-back for the team.

When Richard Draycott (MC’ing at the time) described the winner being in a ‘humble location” my heart started beating a little faster, and when he said “specialists in branded entertainment” it started to pound so that by the time I heard him say “And the winner is ….. Matmi!” I thought the whole audience would be able to see my heart about to leave my chest. The adrenalin rush kicked in and by the time I returned to Table 24, I was shaking like a leaf!

A monstrous Thank You

Guys, girls, everyone who voted for us, a monstrous thank you from the stunned and amazed Matmians of Macclesfield (that previously unknown centre of the universe). Thank you to Table 24 (LBi, BJL & The Drum) for your great company – let’s do it again soon, please. And thank you to everyone at The Drum and the judges of the DADI Awards for your obvious passion for digital marketing, and all the hard work that made last night’s awards ceremony the resounding hit that it was.

From a few over-awed Matmians, I can safely say it’s been a tough week with a fairytale ending which our CEO, Jeff Coghlan, should have been there to see in person, but duty called.

I hope we can live up to our voters’ expectations in Matmi’s second decade, should we work hard enough and be fortunate enough to be writing blogs (or whatever the 2021 incarnation is) by then.

From a very excited team of Matmians, enjoy. Penny

PS. A few quick messages: Ian & Bobby @ Lost Boys – enjoy LBK (Life Before Kids) while you can & all the best for next Spring’s arrivals. Richard – thank you for the name checks (which I’m sure I didn’t deserve) and when I’ve finished the first book, I’ll make you read it . James – JFDI and so will I. Lines ends, over & out.

Unity co-founders Helgasson and Francis warn advancing mobile tech will lead to 'diminishing returns' for developers

Unity co-founders Helgasson and Francis warn advancing mobile tech will lead to 'diminishing returns' for developers | New Digital Media | Scoop.it

While iPhone 4S wowed onlookers at Apple's Let's Talk iPhone event thanks to the appearance of Infinity Blade 2, others worried whether the new power being packed into mobile handsets might quash the indie scene in years to come.

Indeed, Hiive's Andrew Rollings – who detailed such concerns on these very pages at the start of the week – isn't alone in such thoughts.

Adding to the debate, Unity Technologies co-founders David Helgason and Nicholas Francis have given their thoughts on the subject, suggesting sooner or later mobile devices will have to rein in their tech lest developers face diminishing returns.

Platform wars

"If Sony and Microsoft did the PlayStation 4 and Xbox 720, they would completely blow mobiles out of the water, and that's good if you want to make those big experiences," said Unity CCO Francis, speaking at Unite 11.

"But having something that's much more powerful than an Xbox in my cell phone? What am I going to do with that? It's a small screen, I'm playing on the bus, everything is shaking, there's light coming in.

"With mobile, I can see a point in making them two or four times as powerful, but after that it's diminishing returns."

Francis also took the bold step of predicting home consoles will enjoy just one more generation before they die out – a take that echos the views of Mobile Pie's Will Luton, who believes the likes of iOS 5's AirPlay Mirroring suggest Apple is looking to take over the living room.
