Facebook Shares Jump on Upgrades

Facebook Shares Jump on Upgrades | New Digital Media | Scoop.it
After a slow start, Facebook's effort to squeeze more money from advertisers on mobile devices is starting to pay off. Its shares opened sharply higher Wednesday, helped by analyst upgrades.

Matmi ►

Mobile advertising is a mine field so it will be interesting to see if Facebook can maintain this rise in profits from it. As we have seen lately from Google's 'minor' blip, keeping an increasing growth from online advertising is tricky business.

Pinterest Surpasses Twitter & Facebook In One Area [Infographic]

Pinterest Surpasses Twitter & Facebook In One Area [Infographic] | New Digital Media | Scoop.it
We’ve all seen so many infographics about Pinterest lately that’s it’s easy to read the title and think, “Yeah, I get it, Pinterest is kicking ass,” but I found this particular one to be very interesting from a social media psychology perspective.

If you are on Pinterest, you know how much fun it can be. It is more relaxing than some of the other social networking sites because there is no pressure to engage, be active or leave any comments. It’s pretty much just an “anything goes” kind of environment, which I like. If you are on there often, you’ve probably seen that some pins have price tags in the upper left-hand corner which indicate that the product being pinned is for sale.

To Evolve On Facebook We Need Bigger Brains [Video Infographic]

Facebook, facebook, facebook… It’s all about facebook these days, and it’s even gotten to the level where pretty much everyone is checking their facebook at least once a day. Well, not really, but almost 50% of the people on facebook are checking it as soon as they wake up and continuously monitoring it during the day. I read somewhere that a human being can only interact and keep in mind a maximum of 150 friends or so. This is quite interesting to know since we keep adding new friends to our facebook pretty much daily. Whether we keep in regular contact with them or not is of course not the point, but if we were, then we wouldn’t be able to keep track of them all if we managed to get over 150 friends… which it seems most people have.

Loytr Application Brings Facebook Timeline To IPad Users

Loytr Application Brings Facebook Timeline To IPad Users | New Digital Media | Scoop.it

Loytr, the maker of popular Facebook iPad application MyPad, turned its attention to the forthcoming profile upgrade with the release of its new app for the Apple tablet, Timelines for Facebook.

The app brings all of the elements of the timeline profile to users of the Apple tablet, and users can browse their timeline profiles, Facebook friend lists, news feeds, and friends’ timeline profiles, either randomly or in alphabetical order.

Timelines for Facebook is certainly attractive, and it may be one of the only ways to enjoy timeline before the sitewide rollout of the advanced profile.
And Loytr is certainly not a flash in the pan, as MyPad has been downloaded more than 25 million times and boasts over 2.5 million daily users.

Facebook Experiments With Ranked Comments | Social Media Today

On Monday, Facebook began testing a change to the comments format on brand and subscriber pages, with comments that generate the highest level of engagement rising to the top of posts.

YouTube has a very similar comments system, where the comments on videos which receive the most likes are featured at the top of the comments list.

In the case of Facebook’s ranked comments, not only will likes promote comments, but hides will also demote them, the most unpopular comments falling to the bottom.

Viral channels for Android apps to launch ‘in coming weeks’

Viral channels for Android apps to launch ‘in coming weeks’ | New Digital Media | Scoop.it

One of the bits of news hidden in this week’s flood of Facebook marketing and HTML5 announcements is that viral channels for native Android apps are coming to the platform in a few weeks.

That will finally bring the mobile platform to parity between Android and iOS. Developers for both platforms will be able to promote their apps in the news feed and through requests and bookmarks. If a person sees activity from a mobile app in their news feed, they’ll be driven to the app if they have it or the right page in the iTunes store or Android Market for downloading it. Facebook first unveiled these mobile channels back in October, but they were just for iOS and mobile web apps.

Facebook Timeline Is Here: Are You In?

Facebook Timeline Is Here: Are You In? | New Digital Media | Scoop.it

Facebook members are waking up to this new reality: Timeline is officially transitioning from beta to all-out feature. Eventually, Facebook Timeline may be the default view for all Facebook users.

The invite is relatively small and the explanation — at least on your Facebook homepage — is succinct. “Timeline is a collection of the photos, posts and experiences that help you tell your story.” It’s a little sentence, though packed with meaning.

While photos and posts are fairly well-defined entities, “experiences” is much looser, and it’s really the magic of Timeline. As skeletal as your Facebook Timeline may appear when you first see it, it is intended to be a linear biography, a map of your life. You can fill it up and you can let others do so as well.

16 Creative Ways to Make Your Facebook Timeline Cover Photo

16 Creative Ways to Make Your Facebook Timeline Cover Photo | New Digital Media | Scoop.it

At the 2011 f8 conference, Facebook announced Timeline — a major overhaul of the personal Facebook profiles to which we’ve all grown accustomed.

When Timeline is rolled out, your personal profile will be organized in reverse chronological order, as a “timeline” of your life, like an online scrapbook. As Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg says, “Timeline is the story of your life… in a new way to express who you are.”

When Will Timeline Become Available?
At this point, only those who are registered Facebook application developers have the option of converting their personal profiles to the Timeline format. And only they can see the Timelines of others who’ve opted for it.

However, it’s quite easy to become a “developer” for purposes of getting access to Timeline. Read this article on how to quickly become an “app developer” and have the Timeline option for your profile.

Facebook Smart Lists Automatically Group Friends With Shared Characteristics for Use With Privacy Settings

Facebook Smart Lists Automatically Group Friends With Shared Characteristics for Use With Privacy Settings | New Digital Media | Scoop.it

Facebook is currently testing a new feature called Smart Lists that automatically groups friends with common characteristics into Friend Lists that dynamically update themselves over time.

Previously, Friend Lists had to be manually assembled and updated — a chore that contributed to them being used by only 5% of the user base. First spotted by Nick Starr, Smart Lists are now being created for the coworkers, classmates, and friends who live within 50 miles of users in the test group.

►Mini Matmian:

Facebook 'Smart Lists' hey. Automatically grouping your contacts and dynamically updating them. Not sure I like this. Another privacy issue I feel. It's a pretty obvious tactic to combat Google+ cirlces but making taking it a step too far.

Facebook seem  more reactive than active these days. Bolting on things to match their competitors rather than creating new, innovative ways to communicate.
