Social media is an essential part of our daily communications.  It allows us to express our opinions and interact with other people and companies.  Because of this, social media must adapt to our wants and needs.  It is constantly maturing and evolving for the betterment of the platform and its user base.  For one, the recognition that visual content trumps written content helps to shape the way in which social platforms are designed.  They are centered toward more visual content because that is what draws users in.  In addition to this fact, there is a great deal of competition for social media presence.  Businesses creating this content solely for personal benefit are not going to be successful on social media.  There are several myths that cause business to over and under emphasize certain aspects.  Increasing one’s membership size is not always the goal at hand.  Interaction with these consumers is key.  Also, some social media sites try to impose too many new features.  While they do aim to improve the platform, it can scare current users away because of their unfamiliarity.

The article, “A Change is in the Air for Social Media,” is a direct reference to my Scoop.it category of “New Developments in Social Media.”  The article specifically mentions visual content as the new medium for social media advances.  Visual social media websites such as Pinterest and Instagram are gaining much more traction in the business world.  One reason the author mentions for this shift is the ability for visual content to inform and entertain the audience at the same time.  Also the capabilities for these types of websites to connect with their consumer base are key when establishing a brand identity with their audience.  It also stresses the importance of investing money and planning their social media strategies.  In today’s world it is important for companies to be on top of changes in the social media landscape.  When consumers convert to a different platform, a business must be ready to adapt their marketing plan to suit the consumer’s need.

Social influence. Social media is so widely used that it cannot be ignored. If you are a business, you can and must find a way to incorporate social media into your campaign. The article broke down the changes into three separate categories: Number one, visual social content. I took it that people enjoy such entertainment. It takes away the drag of having to read long blog posts or articles. Every company has a brand image, adding pictures to your specific social media website allows for more engagement. It also gives the consumer their own opportunity to upload their own pictures to a company’s site. I picture is worth a thousand words after all. Secondly, social media investment. With the increasing demand of social media, both from a consumer and company standpoint, having the proper knowledge and understanding of the use and effectiveness of a social media outlet is critical. A company has to invest the time and resources to try and master certain outlets. With prices increasing for the opportunity of exposure on social media outlets, such as Facebook or Google, a company having their own outlet such as a website or an active Instagram account can do a great deal of marketing. A company must approach this opportunity whole heartedly. Lastly, social media strategy and planning is the implementation aspect of success. Merely saying you have a Facebook, or telling customers to “go check out our page” is not enough. Being able to incorporate your information social media outlet, your entertainment outlet, etc… can do wonders for your company. Perfect example is artist Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson. With a website with other forms of entertainment, his fans can engage this website for updates and other things going on. He also has a Twitter page that he himself interacts with fans. Lastly, he has been using his Instagram account to release pictures for his upcoming album. Every so often he will release a picture saying, “Coming soon” or “Great music coming”. As he builds anticipation, he has many other outlets to release his music to his mass fan base across the globe.

"Change is the new norm." Companies and workers need to try to keep pace with the latest developments in business technology.

The article I focused on was entitled, “Change is the New Norm.” James Haggerty, the author, spoke of the constant pressure for businesses to change.  A quote from the article that spoke volumes was, “Sometimes what is best for the company is not best for the consumer.  Technology innovation does indeed happen quickly, but adaptation happens slowly.”  The main point of this quote was that companies need to understand the business opportunities that coincide with the advancement of technology.  Companies who are first to latch onto a successful media platform will often be rewarded in terms of sales and followers.  They are thought of in a different light, one that represents their attitude towards change and growth.  Consumers are drawn to companies that interact and attempt to lead the pack in the ways of innovation.  The article mentions how companies must be patient when adapting to new technology.  In some cases, dedicated customers will not be as willing to change as the company may have predicted.  It is important to balance the focus on old customers while keeping an eye out for the future.

This article focuses on the Famuan newspaper’s shift to a completely digital form.  This shift is representative of society as a whole.  Over time, businesses have gradually moved on from a paper format to a digital one.  The main reason for this is for a company to establish an online social presence.  Famuan chose to deliver newspapers to the community solely in an online format.  No longer do the writers need to abide by a word count.  However, a major hurdle that the newspaper must jump is that of gaining traction on different social media platforms.  The owners and editors are seeking to gain “likes” and have their content spread to a wider audience.  In my opinion, this shift is in the best interest of the newspaper.  As previously stated, the newspaper will be able to be viewed by a wider audience and will also be easy to access.  This ability will enable the paper to grow in a fluid manner while retaining its integrity.
