For years now I've been challenging undergraduate nurses to get using Twitter for their professional development. I have an opportunity early in their 3rd and final year to suggest ways of engaging in networked learning.
Etienne Wenger, Beverly Trayner and Maarten de Laat come up with an important new document on community management. "It is a foundation paper presenting a framework for promoting and assessing value creation in communities and networks," they write, "it includes a theoretical framework and toolkit for helping professionals to tell stories on the value that networks and communities create when they are used for learning and to articulate how these activities result in desired outcomes that improve teaching practice." By "community" they mean "community of practice, which [they] define as a learning partnership among people who find it useful to learn from and with each other about a particular domain. It’s clear that today’s students rely heavily on electronic devices even when they’re not incorporated in the classroom. In one survey of college students, 38% said they couldn’t even go 10 minutes without switching on some sort of electronic device.
But how students are using their devices, how technology is affecting their educational experience, and what effect it has on their well-being are questions that are harder to answer. In the infographic below, online higher education database Onlineeducation.net has summed up some of the existing research on these points. Via Anthony Beal
Great blog post by Joyce, on why learning management systems are failing, and how they could be used to really incorporate social learning. Similar to our argumentation about the Hybrid Learning Environment (http://dspace.ou.nl/handle/1820/2575) and our (Dutch) Learning Networks Book (http://books.google.nl/books?id=nwykm-FFwCgC&lpg=PP1&hl=nl&pg=PA146#v=onepage&q&f=false)

Comment: nice collection of slides, even if there is too much emphasis on a PLN as an information filtering device and too little on the in my view mandatory bidirectionality of communication in a network. (pbsloep)

Harvard University has been hot this week: first, there was the announcement of EdX, which I feel will be just another marketing channel for Harvard and M.I.T.. Second, there was the call to their staff to publish in Open Access journals. Which of the two will be more disruptive and conducive of networked learning? My bet is that the second initiative will be more disruptive to academic practice...

"We present a case to reposition theory so that it plays a pivotal role in learning technology research and helps to build an ecology of learning."
A number of people seem to be thinking in the same direction, namely that of trying to bridge between the institutional and the personal learning environment. But have we thought about the profound impact that this line of thinking may have on the concept of the 'Educational institution'?
