New research & maps provide a detailed look at how the brain organizes visual information

New research & maps provide a detailed look at how the brain organizes visual information | Practical Networked Leadership Skills | Scoop.it

How does our brain organize the visual information that our eyes capture? Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, used computational models of brain imaging data to answer this question and arrived at what they call “continuous semantic space” – a notion which serves as the basis for the first interactive maps showing how the brain categorizes what we see.The data on which the maps are based was collected while the subjects watched movie clips. Brain activity was recorded via functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI), a type of MRI that measures brain activity by detecting related changes in blood flow. In order to find the correlations in the data collected, the researchers used a type of analysis known as regularized linear regression...

Talent Matters (SSIR)

Talent Matters (SSIR) | Practical Networked Leadership Skills | Scoop.it
Nonprofits and other social sector organizations are successful (or not) because of their people. We have overlooked this truth for years, at the expense of the talent within our organizations and the missions we aim to achieve. Leading organizations engaged in social sector capacity building have come together in recent years to discuss how to make talent a bigger priority. Here, we aim to advance that conversation in a three-part series. In part one, co-curated by ProInspire CEO Monisha Kapila and Net Impact CEO Liz Maw, eight different nonprofit leaders shared stories from the field and highlighted real-world results achieved through an emphasis on talent. In part two, Linda Wood of the Evelyn and Walter Haas Jr. Fund joined as guest curator, and shared perspectives from funders who invest in social sector leadership as a core grantmaking strategy. In a third and final phase, we share six examples of how social sector organizations are putting talent development into practice in meaningful ways that will hopefully inspire others to do the same.

iPhone Separation Anxiety

iPhone Separation Anxiety | Practical Networked Leadership Skills | Scoop.it
Our smartphones make us anxious and that anxiety then gets in the way of our performance and our relationships. Some call it FOMO—Fear of Missing Out—or nomophobia—Fear of being out of mobile phone contact or FOBO—Fear of Being Offline. Regardless of what you call it, this disorder is a manifestation of anxiety, plain and simple. If someone is separated from their phone they get anxious (well, at least if they are heavy phone users which includes pretty much everyone under 35 or so). And that anxiety is driving their ability to attend to others arou
