Signé le 11 novembre 1918 près de Rethondes, l'Armistice mit un terme à la Première Guerre mondiale qui fit plus d'un million de morts et presque six fois plus de blessés et de mutilés parmi les troupes françaises. Malgré l’étendue des destructions, le soulagement fut immense et la joie s’empara de chaque commune.
Le 11 novembre 1920, la dépouille d'un Soldat Inconnu fut inhumée sous l’Arc de Triomphe à Paris où la flamme est ravivée tous les soirs par le Comité de la flamme et des représentants d’associations.
