In the summer of 1944, U.S. Marines captured the island of Saipan, part of the Mariana Islands. Securing the island was considered crucial in the Allied plan to use the island as an air base for B-29 bomber raids on the Japan mainland.
The Panzer IV tank in question was built in 1944 and used as part of the German effort during World War II. It was eventually bought by Syria in the 1950s. The Israelis captured the Panzer in 1967 during the Six-Day War.
It sets out to investigate what went on in the raid of 16th December 1943, when a large number of bombers, all Lancasters, were lost after a raid on Berlin.
