How a Math Genius Hacked OkCupid to Find True Love

How a Math Genius Hacked OkCupid to Find True Love | Nerdy Needs | Scoop.it

McKinlay, a lanky 35-year-old with tousled hair, was one of about 40 million Americans looking for romance through websites like Match.com, J-Date, and e-Harmony, and he’d been searching in vain since his last breakup nine months earlier. He’d sent dozens of cutesy introductory messages to women touted as potential matches by OkCupid’s algorithms. Most were ignored; he’d gone on a total of six first dates.

On that early morning in June 2012, his compiler crunching out machine code in one window, his forlorn dating profile sitting idle in the other, it dawned on him that he was doing it wrong. He’d been approaching online matchmaking like any other user. Instead, he realized, he should be dating like a mathematician.

James Brown Profile - Godfather of Soul | Nerdy Needs | Scoop.it
When James Brown died on Christmas Day 2006, he left behind a fortune worth tens, maybe hundreds, of millions of dollars. The problem is, he also left behind fourteen children, sixteen grandchildren, eight mothers of his children, several mistresses, thirty lawyers, a former manager, an aging dancer, a longtime valet, and a sister who's really not a sister but calls herself the Godsister of Soul anyway. All of whom want a piece of his legacy

I got it wrong: seven writers on why they changed their minds

I got it wrong: seven writers on why they changed their minds | Nerdy Needs | Scoop.it
Our culture values certainty and dogmatism. We should all be more open about the times when we were wrong - and what made us reconsider. Here, from sex work to the Iraq war, seven writers confess all.
Deanna Dahlsad's insight:

New information & experiences out to bring about reconsideration; even if the new information does not change your mind. It's the evolution of thinking, the process of an open mind.

Catchbox Is A Throwable Microphone To Get The Audience Talking

Catchbox Is A Throwable Microphone To Get The Audience Talking | Nerdy Needs | Scoop.it

Catchbox is a new throwable microphone designed to liven up audience participation, and in turn reduce the faffing around that seems to occur whenever a conference turns to questions from the audience.

The brightly coloured padded cube houses a wireless microphone that doesn’t mind being tossed across a room or passed from person-to-person crowd surfing-style. In fact, it’s actively encouraged. That’s because, along with being able to sustain being dropped, the device has been engineered to automatically mute the sound when flying through the air or if it falls.

Penthouse Interview: Pete Seeger, January, 1971 | Nerdy Needs | Scoop.it

“I would say every artist is, in effect, trying to figure how the human race can be saved from itself. So in those days when we sang for the union workers, and today when I go around and sing on a picket line, I’m not really being all that different. Artists who say ‘We’re only interested in art for art’s sake’ are fooling themselves, I think.”

Getting Organized & Recharging In The New Year

Getting Organized & Recharging In The New Year | Nerdy Needs | Scoop.it

The New Year means resolutions (and spending that holiday gift cash). If you're like me, one of your resolutions is to get more organized and make your home more enjoyable to live in. After all, for the next few weeks (if not months!), we'll all be nestled inside the house, and while we have lots more to do inside now than we once did, all the electronics and entertainment stuff can make your home full of annoying distractions too. Like all those loops of cable wires and cords that every device needs.

Libraries need a feminist agenda...but which one?

Libraries need a feminist agenda...but which one? | Nerdy Needs | Scoop.it

[...] Now, an interesting question is whether the sexism facing librarians is (1) a product of more general, societal issues related to sex and gender, or (2) inherent in librarianship itself. Or, more likely, a little of both. So, are male library directors better paid because of pay disparity in employment in general, or because something about librarianship itself creates pay disparity. Is librarianship fundamentally sexist, or does it merely inherit the more general social trends towards discrimination? [...]

Have Tech Gadgets; Will Travel (But How Long Will They Last?)

Have Tech Gadgets; Will Travel (But How Long Will They Last?) | Nerdy Needs | Scoop.it

The simple math is that there are at least five devices but only two plugs on the car charger. But let's face it; as adults, our calls, email checks on our smartphones, use of Pandora, etc. are necessary. And we parents insist that our phones must be kept charged in case of, you know (*knock on wood*), an actual emergency. Knowing that giving one child the gift of recharging means we need to give the other children the same help makes us a bit reluctant to open that whole can of worms.

So, facing another trip back home for the holidays, I was excited when the folks at Powerocks offered to send one of their latest creations, a pocket-sized mobile charger to review. ...But could it be too good to be true?
