Fashion Models Vie With Engineers for Skilled-Worker Visas

Fashion Models Vie With Engineers for Skilled-Worker Visas | Nerdy Needs | Scoop.it

"The U.S. government grants hundreds of visas to models every year. Although more than half don’t have high school diplomas, according to a Brookings Institution analysis of federal data, the government puts them in the same H-1B category as scientists and software engineers, who need a college degree to qualify. Fashion models only have to show immigration officials that they’re well-known in the industry."

1 in 4 fashion models immigrating to the U.S. are from Brazil.

One percent of H-1B visas go to fashion models - approximately 800 per year.

How a Math Genius Hacked OkCupid to Find True Love

How a Math Genius Hacked OkCupid to Find True Love | Nerdy Needs | Scoop.it

McKinlay, a lanky 35-year-old with tousled hair, was one of about 40 million Americans looking for romance through websites like Match.com, J-Date, and e-Harmony, and he’d been searching in vain since his last breakup nine months earlier. He’d sent dozens of cutesy introductory messages to women touted as potential matches by OkCupid’s algorithms. Most were ignored; he’d gone on a total of six first dates.

On that early morning in June 2012, his compiler crunching out machine code in one window, his forlorn dating profile sitting idle in the other, it dawned on him that he was doing it wrong. He’d been approaching online matchmaking like any other user. Instead, he realized, he should be dating like a mathematician.

What do you get for the designer who has everything? How about nothing? Helvetica The Perfume is literally just water, or "modernism distilled." Created as a gag gift by creative collective Guts and Glory, each bottle costs $62 plus shipping. If you're interested, you might want to hurry, because all shipments go out by Dec. 5.

I Am TOM. I Like to TYPE. Hear That?

I Am TOM. I Like to TYPE. Hear That? | Nerdy Needs | Scoop.it

For less important doodles in text, the kind that go no farther than your desk or refrigerator door, the tactile pleasure of typing old school is incomparable to what you get from a de rigueur laptop. Computer keyboards make a mousy tappy tap tappy tap like ones you hear in a Starbucks — work may be getting done but it sounds cozy and small, like knitting needles creating a pair of socks. Everything you type on a typewriter sounds grand, the words forming in mini-explosions of SHOOK SHOOK SHOOK. A thank-you note resonates with the same heft as a literary masterpiece.

The sound of typing is one reason to own a vintage manual typewriter — alas, there are only three reasons, and none of them are ease or speed. In addition to sound, there is the sheer physical pleasure of typing; it feels just as good as it sounds, the muscles in your hands control the volume and cadence of the aural assault so that the room echoes with the staccato beat of your synapses.

DOWNTOWN FERGUS FALLS MYSTERY TOUR
Join Otter Tail County Historical Society director Chris Schuelke and his cast of characters for the Downtown Fergus Falls Mystery Tour on Thursday, June 6, beginning at 8 p.m. The tour begins in the lobby of the historic River Inn on Mill Street.

Illegal liquor, political scandal, lewd women, ax murders. The sordid history of a major city or that of a quiet town on the prairie? Better known for its abundant churches, geese and well behaved citizens, Fergus Falls also has a dark side that has largely been kept quiet...until now.

Move Over Barbie: This Dress Up Is for Real

Move Over Barbie: This Dress Up Is for Real | Nerdy Needs | Scoop.it

Austin, Texas based “lifestyle” photographer Jaime C. Moore is sick of Barbie. And Disney Princesses too. Now before your feathers get all ruffled, let’s talk about why. As the mother of a 5 year-old daughter and a professional photographer, Jaime wanted to take photos of her daughter in new and creative ways that would not only look great on film, but also get her daughter thinking about the kind of woman she can grow up to be. So she turned to real women like Marie Curie, Sojourner Truth and those featured here for inspiration, and what came out, is absolutely beautiful and inspiring.
