His name's literal meaning in Chinese was 'ara' 'woman' 'niko' 'face like', since he had a face like a woman's (perhaps). Or Aa Ni Ka meaning respectable brother from Nepal (perhaps). He led a group of 80 artisans at the age of 17, crossed the Himalayas and desigened and built many masterpieces in China. His most renowned architecture can still be seen today at the White Stupa of Miaoying Temple in Beijing. Built in 8 years (1271-79), the Stupa better known as White Dagoba was declared historical treasure after the founding of the People's Republic in 1949. Decorated with Ta Sa Thu equivalent of a minister, he is among the few foreigners whose biography can be found in Chinese imperial history books.

Tour buses for Kathmandu in the offing | Nepali Architecture & Urban Planning | Scoop.it

Yalamandu Post: Patan Now and Then 3: Windows Story

Yalamandu Post: Patan Now and Then 3: Windows Story | Nepali Architecture & Urban Planning | Scoop.it

This is not a time lapse photography that compares past and present in multiple frames. The past and present both exist at the same time in one single frame. It is not an uncommon scene that one would encounter in Kathmandu alleys. When the parental property is equally split among offsprings, even the beautifully carved window is measured and cut off according to one's rights. Probably, for this sort of attachment to ancestral property, the old heritage is preserved.

Interactive Mapping and Archive Project(IMAP)

Interactive Mapping and Archive Project(IMAP) | Nepali Architecture & Urban Planning | Scoop.it
IMAP as an Ongoing Process

IMAP began with the idea of mapping the cultural space of Kathmandu valley. We decided the best way to map the cultural space is to archive the work of cultural institutions and independent artists working in the areas of contemporary art and theatre. Accordingly, the first phase was devoted into identifying and archiving the materials of key institutions and artists. In addition, some of us visited the cities of Mumbai and Delhi in India to familiarize ourselves with similar archiving projects in other cities. The ongoing IMAP interview series also began at this phase, and the first batch of IMAP fellowship was awarded to selected candidates. In the second phase the task of constructing the website for the archive began; a phase that will culminate in the workshop for artists/ institutions planned for Dec-Jan 2009-10. The third phase will continue the tasks begun in the first two phases. In addition, the archivists will collect materials related to the areas of traditional and minority art and theatre, including Maoist theatre, Dalit and minority theatres, and Thanka and Paubha painting. The second round of IMAP fellowships will be given to those working in these areas. In the final phase of the project, a collection of research articles on Nepali art and theatre will be published, a documentary on Kathmandu as an urban centre for art and theatre released, an exhibition of the archival materials will be held, and several workshops will be held.
