The Ignominy of Being Poor in an Emerging Asia

... Pepsi drinkers in India, today, easily outnumber those with access to clean, drinking water. Finding a working polyclinic in rural Indonesia, Thailand or Cambodia would be far tougher than procuring aphrodisiacs made out of crushed exotic animals. Paved streets are light years away in many parts of Asia. And those that exist have people pissing on them in the absence of access to proper sanitation. Travelers who have walked through the stinky lanes of New Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta, Kathmandu, Karachi and Islamabad, know exactly what I am talking about. ...

Surviving urbanization #Kathmandu

"In this respect, Nepal is a late bloomer. According to the 2011 census, about 17 per cent of the 26.6 million population of Nepal lives in urban areas. However, considering that the urban population was 13.9 per cent in 2001 and 9.2 per cent in 1991, the increase has been dramatic. While the annual national growth rate stands at around 1.4 per cent, the urban population growth is around 3.4 per cent. The population of Kathmandu district has increased by 60.93 per cent over the last decade, while the household size remained the smallest in the country at 3.71. This clearly shows internal migration to the urban centres and changing demography. For some two million Nepalis, though, even the urban centres have not provided sufficient possibilities and they have moved abroad."
