Siemens achieved a huge milestone in power denisty for electric motors for use in aviation - over 5 kW output per kg of motor... 

“Siemens researchers have developed a new type of electric motor that, with a weight of just 50 kilograms, delivers a continuous output of about 260 kilowatts – five times more than comparable drive systems. 

 

This record-setting propulsion system successfully completed its first public flight at Schwarze Heide Airport near Dinslaken, Germany, where it – almost silently – powered an Extra 330LE aerobatic airplane. The new drive system had already made its maiden flight on June 24th 2016.

 

This advance means that hybrid-electric aircraft with four or more seats will now be possible.”

The California Energy Commission (CEC) has approved a pilot program in which piezoelectric crystals will be installed on several freeways. 

 

Piezoelectric-based energy‐harvesting technology is already being used in other countries. Since 2009, all the displays in the East Japan Railway Company's Tokyo station have been powered by people walking on the piezoelectric flooring. Italy has signed a contract that will install this technology in a portion of the Venice-to-Trieste Autostrada. Israel is already using this technology on some highways, which is how Gatto got the idea for the pilot program in California. A friend returning from a trip to Israel raved about a road that produced energy. 

 

"If piezoelectric‐based technology has the potential to match the performance, reliability and costs of existing or emerging renewable energy sources, then it can potentially diversify California's resource portfolio and ultimately increase grid reliability and reduce costs to ratepayers," states a report prepared for the CEC in 2014 by international certification body and classification society DNV KEMA Energy & Sustainability...

The Tech That Could Fix One of Wind Power's Biggest Problems

June 21 -- Hello World’s Ashlee Vance paid a recent visit to Iceland’s capital city of Reykjavik to see the next part of the green energy story. He found a start-up called Icewind that is building a new type of funky wind turbine designed to perform well in low-wind conditions but also to slow itself down in high-winds, preventing it from catching on fire or ripping apart.

"This type of turbine is called a Savonius vertical axis wind turbine. Technically it's an old technology - it dates back to the Persian empire or something. We have taken this base design and brought it to the modern age with modern materials, carbon fibre and stainless steel. 

We've made it really really strong, we've engineered and cut the blades so that the turbine never goes on overspin. Our system is really really simple so we can keep the price down but it also can take really really harsh weather..."

Solar road technology comes to Route 66

Solar Roadways' dreams of sunlight-gathering paths are one step closer to taking shape. Missouri's Department of Transportation is aiming to install a test version of the startup's solar road tiles in a sidewalk at the Historic Route 66 Welcome Center in Conway.

 

Okay, it won't be on Route 66 just yet, but that's not the point -- the goal is to see whether or not the technology is viable enough that it could safely be used on regular streets. You should see it in action toward the end of the year. 

 

The tiles will be familiar if you've followed Solar Roadways before. Each one combines a solar cell with LED lighting, a heating element and tempered glass that's strong enough to support the weight of a semi-trailer truck. If successful, the panels will feed the electrical grid (ideally paying for themselves) and make the roads safer by both lighting the way as well as keeping the roads free of rain and snow.

A very interesting press release appeared yesterday morning that was brought to our attention. A startup company, Gravitomagnetism, LLC, was granted a patent that enables it a multitude of applications ranging from energy generation to teleportation.

As one Redditor put it:

Do we ever think that air can be used as fuel to run an engine? 

 

Well Hamid, a mechanic from UP has designed such an engine that run on air as a fuel, according to a report published in News18. 

 

Hamid, a resident of Basod village, of Baghpat has developed an engine that has a power of 2-horse power. Hamid after spending 10 years of his life completed the project. 


According to Hamid, this engine can be used as a generator and to run the car with no use of diesel or petrol. 

 

The engine has two air tanks which helps it to run. He is also making an attempt to modify the engine where it can reprocess used air itself to use it as a fuel. 


Hamid says regrets lack of support from the district authorities. “I haven’t got any financial help to design the engine in a better way.”

Unlike a traditional internal combustion engine, which propels a drive shaft, a free piston engine linear generator (FPEG) is designed to generate electricity directly. Magnets attached to the piston move within a linear coil, converting kinetic energy to electrical energy. 

 

A team from Toyota Central R&D Labs presented a prototype FPEG in 2014. Now the Toyota researchers have developed a new FPEG control method that improves the stability and flexibility of the piston motion control.

The Advanced Rail Energy Storage is a 19th century solution for a 21st century problem. 

 

In April, the Bureau of Land Management approved an ARES—that’s Advanced Rail Energy Storage—project, conceived by a Santa Barbara-based energy startup called, well, ARES. By 2019, ARES operations head Francesca Cava says, the facility will occupy 106 acres in the excellently-named town of Pahrump, Nevada. By running a train up and down a hill, ARES can help utilities add to and subtract from the grid as needed.

 

The Nevada project has a power capacity of 50 megawatts and can produce 12.5 megawatt-hours of energy. That’s relatively large, especially compared to a lot of battery storage projects. But it might not be large enough to make money. “Fifty megawatts doesn’t get us to economies of scale,” ARES CEO James Kelly admitted in an interview with UtilityDive. “We are more efficient as we get larger.”

Storing energy by moving a heavy train upwards against gravity and recovering the energy as it comes back down into the valley... not saying it doesn't work, but it seems awfully heavy and expensive.

UK researchers have built a small device that measures tiny fluctuations in gravity, and could be used to monitor volcanoes or search for oil. 

 

Such gravimeters already exist but compared to this postage stamp-sized gadget, they are bulky and pricy.

The new design is based on the little accelerometers found in smartphones...

This is a big upgrade on our ability to work with gravity ... a simple and small and extremely sensitive instrument to measure gravity changes... there must be a thousand uses for that!

Something seems to be moving on the battery front...Graphenano is a Spanish company based in Yecla (Murcia) and they have presented their graphene polymer battery that can largely solve obstacles to the development of the electric car.

They have a partnership with the Chinese company Chint. Chint paid 18 million euros for 10% of the Spanish company.

Grabat Energy, a subsidiary of Graphenano will have a plant in Yecla with 20 production lines. They will produce 80 million battery cells. In this first phase, Grabat will have 200 employees and an investment of 30 million euros, contributed equally by Chint and Graphenano.

The second phase will be much more ambitious. The Chinese company will contribute 350 million euros to Graphenano make a second factory in Yecla. They will form a joint venture to market their products in China. It is expected to have a global revenue exceeding 3 billion and 5,000 employees. They will have batteries for home, mobile, aircraft also produce for bicycles, motorbikes, cars and drones. Grabat has achieved a battery with a range of 800 kilometers and a weight of just 100 kilograms that can be loaded into a conventional outlet only one - third the time required by a lithium-ion-lithium equivalent (which are riding automakers in their electric models). Mario Martinez said in a high-density plug "could be loaded in just five minutes."

Adapted to a car like the Tesla Model S, graphene polymer batteries would increase range from 334 to 1,013 kilometers. In a Nissan Leaf range would increase from 250 to 546 kilometers on a single charge.

Although the Barsha pump (Nepalese for "rain pump") is a new product, it's based on a very old design – it has its origins in ancient Egypt. 


The pump itself is essentially a water wheel on a floating platform, that's moored in a nearby flowing river. The moving water rotates the wheel, that in turn utilizes a spiral mechanism to drive water through an attached hose and up to the fields...

The World’s Advanced Saving Project (WASP) has unveiled the world’s largest delta-style 3D printer, which can build full-size buildings out of mud and clay for nearly zero cost.

 

The massive BigDelta printer stands 12 meters tall (40 feet), and it's nearly completed its first house at a cost of just 48 euros so far.

The SolarWindows coatings would be applied to the inside of a glass-insulated window unit, not on the outside in order to protect the solar cells from the elements. To cut down costs, the coatings are developed for seamless integration into existing glass manufacturing processes.

 

To generate 50 times the power of conventional photovoltaics, the SolarWindows would be applied all sides of the building rather than just the roof.

 

“Invisible wires” in the glass convert photons into electricity and help provide a visual reference to prevent birds from crashing into the glass.

 

The company also believes the technology can achieve a commercially viable 25-year warranty, which is the same lifespan shared by conventional solar panels.

What if cars weren't mass produced? Local Motors, a small-batch auto manufacturer, relies on an online design community and a "co-creation" business model to bring new vehicles to market, really fast. 

 

Olli is Local Motors' latest. And it's different: It's a self-driving system rather than a vehicle, an app-solicited shuttle bus powered by the learning and predictive computer technology of IBM's Watson — all targeted at cities or companies rather than individual buyers. 

 

Some 100 partner companies helped make Olli a reality. But before the curvy, puffy reversible minibus became Olli, it started as a boxy sketch and was at one point called "Edgar 8," after its designer. 

 

"This is the first time that I see a product that I designed, to see it in a real scale," Sarmiento says.

By coating nickel foam with a nickel-iron nanosheets, scientists have made an efficient catalyst that could be used to produce hydrogen at the industrial scale.

 

“Our electrode is the most efficient oxygen-producing electrode in alkaline electrolytes reported to date, to the best of our knowledge,” says Associate Professor Chuan Zhao, from the University of New South Wales School of Chemistry.

 

“It is inexpensive, sturdy and simple to make, and can potentially be scaled up for industrial application of water splitting.”

Ever since the EU restricted sales of traditional incandescent light bulbs, homeowners have complained about the shortcomings of their energy-efficient replacements. 

The clinical white beam of LEDs and frustrating time-delay of 'green' lighting has left many hankering after the instant, bright warm glow of traditional filament bulbs. 

But now scientists in the US believe they have come up with a solution which could see a reprieve for incandescent bulbs. 

Researchers at MIT have shown that by surrounding the filament with a special crystal structure in the glass they can bounce back the energy which is usually lost in heat, while still allowing the light through. 

They refer to the technique as 'recycling light' because the energy which would usually escape into the air is redirected back to the filament where it can create new light. 

"It recycles the energy that would otherwise be wasted," said Professor Marin Soljacic.

Scientists have used sunlight to turn seawater (H2O) into hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), which can then be used in fuel cells to generate electricity. It is the first photocatalytic method of H2O2 production that achieves a high enough efficiency so that the H2O2 can be used in a fuel cell.

 

The biggest advantage of using liquid H2O2 instead of gaseous hydrogen (H2), as most fuel cells today use, is that the liquid form is much easier to store at high densities.

 

"In the future, we plan to work on developing a method for the low-cost, large-scale production of H2O2 from seawater," Fukuzumi said. "This may replace the current high-cost production of H2O2 from H2 (from mainly natural gas) and O2."

In looking at the Rossi eCat ‘ERV’ report claims as published by Andrea Rossi, [it is clear that] few people that I know of expected the claimed results to include a COP [or Coefficient of Performance] of 50. I think most if not all, who expected any results at all, imagined it might average out at at least 3 but optimistically up to 6.

 

The announcement that it reached 50 for such a long period of the test was stunning to say the least. A COP of 50 is not a simple advance, it would be spectacular and if accepted today, an energy game-changer and a perfect example of a ‘disruptive’ technology. One that has the potential in a very short period to shift the way energy is created and used...

Cold Fusion is very much alive and it might be the energy game changer we had hoped for when the first announcement by Fleichman and Pons was greeted with hostility and ridicule...

A new hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicle prototype has been launched with a claimed fuel economy equivalent to 250 mpg (0.9 L/100km).


Dubbed "Rasa," the new car has a lightweight carbon-fiber monocoque shell, in-wheel electric motors, a bank of supercapacitors charged by braking-regeneration, and a host of other features that enable it to travel up to a claimed 300 miles (483 km) on just a 3.3 lb (1.5 kg) tank of hydrogen.

Hydrogen electric cars ... now if they could make that 3.3 lb tank small and exchangeable, the problem of scarcity of refuelling stations would be solved - we could just take a few filled tanks along for the trip...
