10% upper limit of bodyweight loss sufficient to determine maximum-tolerated dose
National Centre for the 3Rs - Pioneering Better Science's insight:

Acting as an honest broker in this way has proven successful to identify an objective methodology to minimise animal suffering in short-term toxicity studies. Defining the maximum-tolerated dose is crucially important for this in addition to making it easier to select an appropriate dose for future studies.

Lung-on-a-chip device could reduce animal drug testing | News | The Engineer

Lung-on-a-chip device could reduce animal drug testing | News | The Engineer | National Centre for the 3Rs in the news | Scoop.it
US scientists have created a tiny device that simulates a working human lung and could reduce the need for animal drug testing.
National Centre for the 3Rs - Pioneering Better Science's insight:

In a London ceremony, Wyss Founding Director Don Ingber, received the NC3Rs 3Rs Prize from the UK’s National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research (NC3Rs) for his innovative lung-on-a-chip – a microdevice lined by human cells that recapitulates complex functions of the living lung.

“We believe that our human breathing lung-on-a-chip, and other organ chips we have in development, represent a first wave of exciting new alternative approaches to animal testing that hopefully will change how drug development is carried out in the future,” says Ingber.

Scientists are developing a desk-top machine that "plays" plug-in cartridges of channels and membranes lined with human cells. ->
National Centre for the 3Rs - Pioneering Better Science's insight:

NC3Rs 3Rs Prize WInner, Don Ingber, Wyss Institute Harvard University, is developing a desk-top machine that “plays” plug-in cassettes about the size of a USB memory stick designed to simulate the complicated mechanical and biochemical behaviors of human organs. The little devices could put the kibosh on animal testing, speed up drug development and make medicine more affordable.
