A UK group is developing alternatives to the use of animals in the lab.
National Centre for the 3Rs - Pioneering Better Science's insight:

"I think many scientists will use a combination of approaches. So they may use animal models but they will also use in vitro approaches as well to answer different questions within their field. But I think what we are seeing is a new generation of researchers who are very committed to the three Rs and very receptive to three Rs techniques, and that's where they see the future of science."

National Centre for the 3Rs - Pioneering Better Science's insight:

Dr Mark Prescott, head of research management at the NC3Rs, said it was widely recognised that reliance on animal testing was one reason for the "large attrition rates" of new drugs.

"I think the (pharmaceutical) industry does recognise that animals are part of the bottle neck and that needs to be addressed," he said.

National Centre for the 3Rs - Pioneering Better Science's insight:

“People do still worry about CO2 and it’s still almost certainly the most widely used method [for killing rodents],”says Huw Golledge, who studies the anaesthesia of lab animals at Newcastle University, UK. Golledge organized the meeting, which is backed by the London-based National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research. Its aim is to update a 2006 consensus document produced by international experts to give guidance to researchers working with animals.

National Centre for the 3Rs - Pioneering Better Science's insight:

"The headline figures do not highlight the significant advances in recent years to develop new approaches to replace, reduce or refine the use of animals in research. The NC3Rs is working at the heart of the international scientific community to fund and drive reductions in animal use and implement advances in welfare practice. Our success can be demonstrated across many research areas including diabetes, epilepsy, veterinary vaccines, pesticide development and research using non-human primates. This work cannot be achieved overnight, but depends on a concerted effort to bring about a culture-shift in how science is practised."

National Centre for the 3Rs - Pioneering Better Science's insight:

“Bodyweight loss is a very objective measure,” explains study author, Kathryn Chapman, from NC3Rs. “Anybody can use that measure. We have looked at it for maximum-tolerated dose but the idea is that the chemical industry could look at it for evident toxicity.”
