Vasquez: KD Will Lead Raptors to NBA Title

Vasquez: KD Will Lead Raptors to NBA Title | NBA Media Circus Players and Staff: The Impact of the Buzz | Scoop.it

It'If the Oklahoma City Thunder have their way, Kevin Durant will be suiting up in orange, black and blue until the sun explodes...

Scott Chasen's insight:

It's always amusing to me when players on one team feel the need to talk about others around the league, especially because the ones that are usually doing the talking are the guys who aren't currently playing. In this case, Toronto Raptors' guard Grieves Vasquez recently said in an interview that he believes Kevin Durant will join the Raptors when his contract expires in 2016. While this is certainly a possible scenario, the fact of the matter is that Vasquez is doing the talking because his Raptors were already eliminated from the playoffs. It's the teams like the San Antonio Spurs that make the Finals year after year, and those teams rarely give interviews like that to the media. Vasquez really needs to stop distracting himself and his team with goals of the future, and focus on the present if his Raptors are going to go further next year.

Were Mark Jackson's religious views an issue with Warriors?

Were Mark Jackson's religious views an issue with Warriors? | NBA Media Circus Players and Staff: The Impact of the Buzz | Scoop.it

There are so many layers and pivot points in the Mark Jackson story that one hardly knows where to look next.  This was a clash of personalities and egos first and foremost. It was not about results because the Warriors record over the past two years has been nothing worthy..."

Scott Chasen's insight:

Mark Jackson was fired as the coach of the Warriors after one of the most successful seasons in team history, after losing in the first round of the playoffs. However, much information has come out about why Jackson was fired, from disagreements with the staff to a possible religious issue. It's a lot to take in, but this media storm that is brewing in Oakland may leave a lot of coaches unwilling to take over the obviously talented team. Additionally, one has to wonder how the players are going to react to this, as any of them really liked Jackson, and other players in the NBA have chimed in with their opinions too. This fiasco could end up really damaging the team in the coming weeks, and it could really spell trouble for the Warriors.

Nick Young Tweets: 'I'll Be the New Coach'

Nick Young Tweets: 'I'll Be the New Coach' | NBA Media Circus Players and Staff: The Impact of the Buzz | Scoop.it
Move over, Kevin Ollie, Byron Scott and John Calipari. There's a new candidate for the Los Angeles Lakers ' head coaching position...
Scott Chasen's insight:

Nick Young, who is also known by the moniker of "Swaggy P," has been all over the place this year. The Los Angeles Laker did his best Kobe impression by creating a buzz no matter what he was doing. Recently, Mike D'Antoni stepped down as the Los Angeles Lakers coach, prompting Nick Young to go out and tweet: "I'll be the New Coach" -- presumably of the Los Angeles Lakers. Why? That is the question I would ask to a guy like Young, who took time to throw out the first pitch at the Dodgers game recently (and he missed the catcher by a tremendous margin). Why? Why does he need to be so much of a distraction? It certainly has a tough effect on his team.

Pacers vets pull Roy Hibbert aside

Following a zero-point, zero-rebound performance in a 102-96 Game 1 loss to the Washington Wizards, All-Star center Roy Hibbert was pulled aside by teammates David West and Rasual Butler, according to a report by the team's website.
Scott Chasen's insight:

Roy Hibbert is having one of the most dreadful post seasons of all time, especially for an All Star. In fact, Hibbert's PER of less than 3 would set the record for the lowest by any All Star, shattering the current record. Now, while Hibbert has been poor, the media attention cannot be helping, as today we learned that Hibbert was basically given the basketball version of an intervention by his teammates. It remains to be seen if this "meeting" will help HIbbert, but one has to imagine that the season may already be lost for him.

Jay Z is happy, Drake stunned as Nets beat Raptors in final seconds

Jay Z is happy, Drake stunned as Nets beat Raptors in final seconds | NBA Media Circus Players and Staff: The Impact of the Buzz | Scoop.it
The internet has a grand old time at Drizzy's expense as Brooklyn advances to series against Miami Heat.
Scott Chasen's insight:

The distractions just keep on coming as international icon Drake was shown over and over on the broadcast of the Nets-Raptors game seven. Drake really served as a distraction for the teams and the fans, as the cameras kept panning over to him to get his reaction to each play, which baffled many including myself. Who cares? There's no reason for Drake to be shown over and over and over, and that distraction cannot be welcome in the Raptor's camp, especially considering that they are now out of the playoffs after losing Game 7.

NBA investigating if Clippers owner Donald Sterling made racist comments

NBA investigating if Clippers owner Donald Sterling made racist comments | NBA Media Circus Players and Staff: The Impact of the Buzz | Scoop.it
Man taped asking an associate
Scott Chasen's insight:

Donald Sterling is the owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, and he has been known to make statements that aren't always exactly politically correct. This time Sterling may have gone too far, however, as it looks like the NBA is getting to take some major action against him. This distraction will certainly affect how the Clippers play, especially considering they have a playoff game tomorrow.

NBA Trade Rumors: Cleveland Cavaliers promise major trade in offseason

NBA Trade Rumors: Cleveland Cavaliers promise major trade in offseason | NBA Media Circus Players and Staff: The Impact of the Buzz | Scoop.it
Ever since before the trade deadline in February, the Cleveland Cavaliers have been rumored to be making a big trade. While no big trade happened after the swap with Chicago that landed them Loul Deng, it appears that all the rumblings of a big move have been confirmed by owner Dan Gilbert. According to FOXSports […]
Scott Chasen's insight:

It's really never good when the owner of the team has to assure fans that changes will be made. By telling the fans that "someone" will be traded all Dan Gilbert has effectively done is make every single player feel uncomfortable, which is not a good strategy by any reasoning.

Kupchak says Kobe Bryant will not be consulted about Mike D'Antoni

Kupchak says Kobe Bryant will not be consulted about Mike D'Antoni | NBA Media Circus Players and Staff: The Impact of the Buzz | Scoop.it
Lakers star won't be a part of the decision making as to whether to retain their head coach or not.
Scott Chasen's insight:

This is fascinating to me. A major story on CBSSports.com will be whether or not a player far past his prime with injury problems will be consulted concerning the hypothetical firing of the current coach, despite the fact that the team is currently paying multiple coaches (previously fired ones). I've refrained from using the term "dumpster fire" up to this point, but the Lakers are getting close to a complete meltdown. They are a team with very opinionated players who have little impact on the court, and they are one of the worst teams in the NBA. With only a few games remaining in the season it'll be interesting to see if the Lakers can finish their dreadful 2013-2014 campaign without suffering a complete collapse.

Pau Gasol remains with Lakers as NBA trade deadline passes

Pau Gasol remains with Lakers as NBA trade deadline passes | NBA Media Circus Players and Staff: The Impact of the Buzz | Scoop.it
Pau Gasol is still with the Lakers, somewhat miraculously surviving another NBA trade deadline. The 33-year-old veteran was not dealt before Thursday's noon cut-off time, keeping him with the team...
Scott Chasen's insight:

This has been about the fourth or fifth time that Gasol has been thought of as gone from LA. He was reportedly going to Phoenix this time around, but Gasol has seen his name surface in trade rumors year after year. It has to be frustrating for a guy like Gasol, who is a really solid performer and multiple time All-Star.

Why Would Anthony Leave Knicks in Free Agency?

Why Would Anthony Leave Knicks in Free Agency? | NBA Media Circus Players and Staff: The Impact of the Buzz | Scoop.it
Nearly one year removed from legitimate NBA title contention, the New York Knicks have afforded Carmelo Anthony nothing if not the freedom of choice...
Scott Chasen's insight:

Ah Speculation. While the Knicks have not been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs I do find it interesting that there is such great speculation about Carmelo Anthony. He isn't as great a player as LeBron (he isn't even close to LeBron), yet he's talked about just as much in terms of leaving for Free Agency. This certainly serves as a distraction for all the players and even the coach as they wonder about their future with the Knicks. Oh, and it doesn't help that they just hired Phil Jackson. New York has become a media circus, which is fun for the NBA Fans (although not especially Knicks' fans), but really awful for the players.

Pistons Fire Head Coach Cheeks

Pistons Fire Head Coach Cheeks | NBA Media Circus Players and Staff: The Impact of the Buzz | Scoop.it
At 21-29 and going through the motions of another mediocre NBA season, it's clear the Detroit Pistons needed to make a change. That change comes in the form of first-year head coach Maurice Cheeks getting the axe on Sunday afternoon...
Scott Chasen's insight:

Before the season the Pistons were thought to have a decent team with a chance of making the post season. Brandon Jennings, Greg Monroe, Andre Drummond, and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope were supposed to make some noise in the East, but again the Pistons are struggling, and Joe Dumars (the GM of the Pistons) is going to have to fire another coach. It's really only a matter of time until Dumars is forced to step down, as he really hasn't made any effective moves since 2007.

Eyes Are Off the Court as the Knicks Get a Rare Win on It

Eyes Are Off the Court as the Knicks Get a Rare Win on It | NBA Media Circus Players and Staff: The Impact of the Buzz | Scoop.it
With speculation that Carmelo Anthony was leaving and Phil Jackson was coming, the Knicks still managed to craft a victory over the lowly Utah Jazz.
Scott Chasen's insight:

The Knicks have certainly been nothing special this year. Rumors have been flying around more frequently than wins, but it was interesting to hear that Phil Jackson was making a return to the NBA this week. Apparently Jackson will be accepting a management position with the Knicks, which is somewhat exciting for fans of New York. Regardless, the Jackson move is just another distraction from the Knicks' play on the court, although I suppose it isn't necessarily a bad thing considering that they may not even make the playoffs in a horrid Eastern conference.

Damian Lillard nabs massive shoe deal in midst of NBA Playoffs

Damian Lillard nabs massive shoe deal in midst of NBA Playoffs | NBA Media Circus Players and Staff: The Impact of the Buzz | Scoop.it
Damian Lillard's shoe deal was a low risk one because of his character, says Adidas
Scott Chasen's insight:

Damian Lillard has signed a gigantic shoe deal with Adidas, which many consider a low risk move because of his high character, but there is something to be said for the fact that this deal was signed around the start of the NBA playoffs, and it has considered to serve as a distraction this week. The Portland Trailblazers are now down 3-0 to the San Antonio Spurs, and the distractions aren't going away anytime soon. One thing is for sure, if the Blazers are going to make history by being the first NBA team to comeback from a 3-0 playoffs deficit, they'll need their superstar point guard focusing solely on the action that takes place on the court, and less on his shoe game.

Report: Lakers eyeing Roy Williams as next coach | NBA Media Circus Players and Staff: The Impact of the Buzz | Scoop.it
Could Los Angeles hire UNC coach Roy Williams?
Scott Chasen's insight:

Current North Carolina basketball coach (and former KU coach) Roy Williams is the new surprise candidate to emerge for the Lakers' head coaching job. The Lakers are officially in free fall, as no one really knows where to turn next... especially the players. While the Lakers look for their next coach, I can tell you what the players aren't doing: Learning a new system. Learning their new plays. The distraction that this search has caused has already done more harm than good, and it's time the Lakers find their next head coach, unless they want to continue to tank for an additional season.

Bobcats fly back to Charlotte to avoid Miami distractions during Heat series

Bobcats fly back to Charlotte to avoid Miami distractions during Heat series | NBA Media Circus Players and Staff: The Impact of the Buzz | Scoop.it

Knowing the distractions of Miami might be too much to ignore for a young team, Charlotte Bobcats coach Steve Clifford made the decision to fly his team back to North Carolina"

Scott Chasen's insight:

“Let’s face it, if it were a city other than Miami we would have been more likely to stay a couple days." This was the quote from Bobcats' coach Steve Clifford that really intrigued a lot of guys. The Bobcats decided to fly back to Charlotte in between playoff games against the Miami Heat, despite the fact that both games were in Miami. While the goal of the Bobcats was to avoid the distractions, they actually brought a lot of intrigue upon themselves, which was the exact opposite result. Ultimately, it didn't matter either way though, as they lost in four games. Maybe the solution next time should just be to lay low rather than making it an issue.

Toronto Raptors' season over after dramatic Game 7 loss to Brooklyn Nets
Scott Chasen's insight:

The Toronto Raptor's season came to a close after losing a tough Game 7 to the Brooklyn Nets, however, they had to consider this year at least somewhat successful. However, numerous distractions really derailed the team, from the Rudy Gay trade to the Kyle Lowry trade rumors, to Drake playing the role as "celebrity fan" as we've seen with the Lakers and Jack Nicholson. Ultimately, the Raptors may have been outplayed, but the future is certainly bright for that team.

The Clippers are having major problems right now with their owner, and Kobe Bryant can't help but include his opinion in the matter, which isn't necessarily a bad thing for the league. Interesting enough, Kobe seems to be in the media more and more when he isn't playing, and the media storm that is Los Angeles is continuing to grow and grow and grow... for both of the franchises there.

Steve Kerr was wearing a psychedelic print shirt and a light blue blazer to honor his TNT colleague and friend Craig Sager, who is being treated for leukemia.
Scott Chasen's insight:

Well... we already went through this when the Knicks were looking to hire Phil Jackson, but now the rumors are about a new coach when the Knicks' current coach, Mike Woodson, is still under contract. It can never be pleasing to here rumors of yourself being replaced. Also, it what message does it send to the players? They don't even have to listen to Mike Woodson anymore as far as off-season workouts are concerned. Right? After all... it's not like he's going to be there that much longer.

Scott Chasen's insight:

The Pacers have been reeling and they cannot seem to break out of the slum they're currently in. Head coach Frank Vogel decided that he was going to sit all five starters for Wednesday's game against the Bucks, with the goal of allowing all the players to refocus and figure out how to get back to winning ways. It's normally not a good thing to be the focal point of the media, but being  in the eye of the public because of an unsuccessful run is even worse.

As the Cavaliers continue to struggle, Kyrie Irving had some words for another Cleveland athlete, albeit in a completely different sport. NEW ORLEANS — The All-Star stage is meant to be a shared space, a broad platform designed to support the NBA ’s greatest talents and egos all at once. Kobe Bryant has never been much for sharing, though...
Scott Chasen's insight:

This story makes me laugh. How in the world can a guy not playing in the All Star game be talked about more than anyone else? The Dunk Contest was lame, and nobody really cared about the All Star game, so I guess Bryant was the only thing left to talk about. It does beg the question about whether or not fans should be allowed to vote for All Star starters, considering that Kobe Bryant was elected to the All Star game despite playing in less than 10 games on the year. Oh well. The Lakers are terrible anyway. At least it gives people something to talk about.

Unless Kyrie likes taking insane financial risks, he's stuck with the Cavs until at least 2018. That's unless they decide he's not worth the trouble.
Scott Chasen's insight:

This article is hilarious to me. Everyone is talking about Kyrie Irving wanting out of Cleveland, but all of a sudden now he isn't going anywhere until 2018! This article seems like it was written by a desperate Cavaliers fan clinging to the hope that millionaire Kyrie Irving would rather make a few extra bucks than play for a winning team. Oh well. Phil Jackson is back in NY | SI.com

Phil Jackson is back in NY | SI.com | NBA Media Circus Players and Staff: The Impact of the Buzz | Scoop.it
There are really only two ways this potential marriage can go. Phil Jackson realizes after a year or two that Knicks owner James Dolan will never be anything other than an erratic, impulsive boss who won't give him full autonomy, and he abandons ship with a truckful of Madison Square Garden cash while the Knicks, the classic attention-deficit-disorder franchise, go on to chase the next shiny object. Or, Jackson's 11-ring pedigree persuades Dolan to curtail his meddlesome ways, he brings a Zen-like stability to the organization, hires some smart, hard-working lieutenants and restores the Knicks' luster, if not contends for a title.
Scott Chasen's insight:

Phil Jackson is with the Knicks. Honestly, this move surprised me a bit, but Jackson certainly knows what he's doing. Now lots of speculation is going around on what this means for Carmelo Anthony's future in New York. I'm just wondering if it will translate to wins on the court as the Knicks are fighting to get back in to the Playoffs. I get that fans are really worried about the potential departure of their 'superstar' forward, but if they can't make the playoffs with him... isn't it time to move on? Food for thought.

NBA Rumors: Luol Deng and others frustrated with Cleveland Cavaliers | NBA Media Circus Players and Staff: The Impact of the Buzz | Scoop.it
The Cavs want to make this work this year, but is this team broken beyond repair?
Scott Chasen's insight:

The Cavaliers have lost all chemistry in the locker room, and a large part of that is that there is no specific leader. Luol Deng, who is one of the more experienced players on the Cavs, is just the most recent player to express his frustrations with the team. Kyrie Irving has been critical to numerous sources, although he continues to deny it, and Mike Brown isn't able to handle the situation very well. Ultimately this team is in the midst of an awful season and they have likely killed any chance they had of landing LeBron James in 2014. Just awful.
