Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic condition for which there is no consensus on the optimum treatment. Gastroenterology problems are some of the most common conditions treated by homeopaths, yet few trials have explored the effectiveness of individualised homeopathic treatment for IBS.

Cottesloe Naturopathic Clinic's insight:

New research on patients with irritable bowel syndrome - or IBS - treated with homeopathy shows promise. 62.5 percent of patients in the homeopathic treatment arm (compared to 25.0 percent of those in the usual care arm), achieved a clinically relevant change in irritable bowel symptom severity score... #IBS #homeopathy

Why Eating Wheat and GMOs Will Destroy Your Health - Waking Times « Waking Times

Why Eating Wheat and GMOs Will Destroy Your Health - Waking Times « Waking Times | naturopathy for irritable bowel syndrome | Scoop.it

A new study indicates that wheat contributes to the growth of pathogenic bacteria in our gut, adding to growing concern that GMO foods are doing the same.

Cottesloe Naturopathic Clinic's insight:

Wheat consumption favours the growth of pathogenic bacteria in the gut, whether or not we have coeliac disease or an obvious gluten sensitivity. GMO foods do the same. I know since I have given up eating wheat - and all grains except a little brown, red and black rice - the niggling aches and pains from my exercise program which I had put down to aging have disappeared. It's a pro-inflammatory food that we are all better off without...

Bowel nosodes: the last weapon to a well functioning system | Healing Naturally

Bowel nosodes: the last weapon to a well functioning system | Healing Naturally | naturopathy for irritable bowel syndrome | Scoop.it

In my practice I find more and more that at the root of many of my patients’ problems is an imbalance in their gut flora. Our modern times are creating an epidemic of such imbalances. Babies being born through c-sections and not getting those friendly bacteria from the mother’s birth canal, babies not being breastfed, kids being prescribed one course of antibiotic after another, a diet rich in sugars ...

Cottesloe Naturopathic Clinic's insight:

The bowels are the most important aspect of our immune response, and the link between our bowel flora and our emotions has only recently been appreciated. This article outlines how the "bowel nosodes", homeopathic remedies derived from "bad" gut bacteria, can be an important adjunct to homeopathic treatment, particularly in diverse conditions, including irritable bowel syndrome, immune problems and emotional and behavioural problems, particularly in children...

5 Steps to Kill Hidden Bad Bugs in Your Gut that Make You Sick - Dr. Mark Hyman

5 Steps to Kill Hidden Bad Bugs in Your Gut that Make You Sick - Dr. Mark Hyman | naturopathy for irritable bowel syndrome | Scoop.it

There are trillions of bacteria in your gut and they collectively contain at least 100 times as many genes as you do. The bacterial DNA in your gut outnumbers your own DNA by a very large margin. This bacterial DNA controls immune function, regulates digestion and intestinal function, protects against infections, and even produces vitamins and nutrients.

Cottesloe Naturopathic Clinic's insight:

By and large, the gut is the most important part of the immune system. It also has a huge influence on our mood because it produces neurotransmitters. To control this aspect of health, there is much that can be achieved by diet, and also through constitutional homeopathy, including the use of bowel nosodes. see our pages: www.cottnat.com.au/treatment-of-irritable-bowel-syndrome.asp and www.naturopath-perth.com.au/homeopathy-and-naturopathic-treatment-of-irritable-bowel-syndrome-perth.html

Eating probiotic yoghurt relieves anxiety, says study - Telegraph

Eating probiotic yoghurt relieves anxiety, says study - Telegraph | naturopathy for irritable bowel syndrome | Scoop.it
Eating probiotic yoghurt twice a day could relieve anxiety and stress by reducing activity in the emotional area of the brain, a study has found.
Cottesloe Naturopathic Clinic's insight:

We know that patients with irritable bowel syndrome handle stress poorly and often have high anxiety, and have assumed the anxiety was causing the problem. Maybe it's not so simple. As the researcher said: "Time and again we hear from patients that they never felt depressed or anxious until they started experiencing problems with their gut. Our study shows that the gut-brain connection is a two-way street." See our Perth clinic page:  http://www.cottnat.com.au/treatment-of-irritable-bowel-syndrome.asp

How Do Grains, Legumes and Dairy Cause a Leaky Gut? Part 1: Lectins - The Paleo Mom

How Do Grains, Legumes and Dairy Cause a Leaky Gut? Part 1: Lectins - The Paleo Mom | naturopathy for irritable bowel syndrome | Scoop.it
(Created as a guest post for The Paleo Parents) One of the fundamental principles of paleolithic nutrition is to protect the lining of the gut by eliminating foods that damage it.  By prioritizing gut health, we are able to treat and prevent the many health issues associated with having a “leaky gut”.  But how exactly …
Cottesloe Naturopathic Clinic's insight:

Lectins are a class of proteins found in many types of seeds that are part of the plant’s natural defense mechanism. The best known is gluten - a lectin found in wheat, oats and barley.  Gluten sensitivity has already been linked to dozens of autoimmune diseases.  Even in individuals who do not have celiac disease or gluten sensitivity, it can take up to six months for the gut to fully heal after a single gluten exposure.  While other lectins may not be quite as damaging as gluten, scientists continue to discover new ways in which foods that contain lectins can contribute to a leaky gut, inflammation and autoimmune diseases... #lectins #glutensensitivity #leakygut #autoimmunedisease

Eat aloe vera gel for a multitude of health benefits

Eat aloe vera gel for a multitude of health benefits | naturopathy for irritable bowel syndrome | Scoop.it

Researching the health benefits of aloe vera gel, a long varied list is compiled. The best way to find out if it is a cure for what ails you is to try it for few days or a month

Cottesloe Naturopathic Clinic's insight:

Eating aloe vera gel has many benefits. It helps alkalise the body, has anti cancer properties, reduces inflammation and arthritis pain and helps treat irritable bowel syndome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). This article outlines many other benefits and includes a video showing how to harvest and prepare the fresh plant - in particular how to avoid the bitter and irritant components. Wheat As A Common Cause of Dyspepsia and Irritable Bowel

Wheat As A Common Cause of Dyspepsia and Irritable Bowel | naturopathy for irritable bowel syndrome | Scoop.it
Could common complaints of bloating, abdominal tenderness and indigestion following a meal, and even the increasingly prevalent complaint lazily labeled 'irritable bowel syndrome' by conventional medicine, be worsened -- even caused -- by...
Cottesloe Naturopathic Clinic's insight:

It is time to go beyond the idea that wheat toxicity is a rare situation that only afflicts those who coeliac disease.  As this article explains, the focus should be on the disease trigger itself: wheat. Don't blame the victim (it's bad genes; you are "sensitive or intolerant" to gluten; it is just an allergy you have) and start focusing on the real problem: wheat represents a human species-specific intolerance, and wheat toxicity is a universal affliction. We are all better off without it. See our Perth clinic pages: www.cottnat.com.au/treatment-of-irritable-bowel-syndrome.asp and

10 Signs You're Gluten Intolerant | naturopathy for irritable bowel syndrome | Scoop.it
More than 55 diseases have been linked to gluten, the protein found in wheat, rye, and barley.
Cottesloe Naturopathic Clinic's insight:

A lot more people have gluten sensitivity than celiac disease, a more serious complaint. Sensitivity to gluten, the protein in wheat, rye, barley and oats is widespread. Often homeopathic treatment can improve the situation or the tolerance, but in many cases it is best avoided. This article explains how to recognise the probablity that gluten is an issue. BHA: Irritable Bowel Syndrome

BHA: Irritable Bowel Syndrome | naturopathy for irritable bowel syndrome | Scoop.it

It is a cluster of symptoms, (see below) rather than a pathological disease, and is assumed to be due to disordered bowel motility, or possibly increased sensitivity to gut sensation, which in turn may be due to a variety of factors. These may include stress, food intolerance or the after-effects of a tummy bug. Sometimes the condition seems to be a consequence of simple constipation, or a sudden change in diet

Cottesloe Naturopathic Clinic's insight:

This article from the British Homeopathic association describes the varied symptoms and causes of irritable bowel syndrome. It outlines the orthodox treatment and the homeopathic approach, which focuses on treating the whole person, including the emotional triggers. Research - Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Research - Irritable Bowel Syndrome | naturopathy for irritable bowel syndrome | Scoop.it

Vitamin  D supplements may help those with Crohn's disease overcome  the fatigue  and decreased muscle strength associated with the  inflammatory bowel  disease, according to new research. Several other studies on IBS are also discussed

Cottesloe Naturopathic Clinic's insight:

This page covers a number of studies on IBS and IBD. In the first, Vitamin D has been shown to help ease Crohn's symptoms. On IBS there are studies that show positive effects from probiotic use and three studies that show hypnosis and mind/body psychological treatments improve patients with irritable bowel syndrome. In IBS there is obviously a connection with the emotional state and stress response of the patient. This is why constitutional homeopathy can be so beneficial to patients with these problems, as we find at our Perth naturopathic clinic.
