Stumbling towards an update on Ches Bay water quality trading

Stumbling towards an update on Ches Bay water quality trading | Nature + Economics | Scoop.it

Water quality trading can get you where you want to go, cheaper. That’s the basic finding of Nutrient Credit Trading for the Chesapeake Bay, a report released May 10th by research firm RTI International. More on that later, but the report got me thinking: what’s new in water quality trading in the Chesapeake?

Tennessee Highway Agency Settles Major Wetland Suit - 05/21/2012 - Chattanoogan.com

Lawsuit by Public Employees for Env Responsibility against TDOT for failed wetland mitigation. TDOT going to pay $530,000 settlement package - which includes creating 20 acres wetlands/shore bird ponds (?), retiring 10 acres of wetland bank credits. PEER apparently dug up a 1999 TN Tech study and then got some Vanderbilt interns to conduct field surveys to show failed mit. Some other back story I don't completely understand: in '09, TDOT said - hey TDEC, why don't you take $4.7 million and figure out this mitigation stuff for 185 permits (and be responsible for it.)

OR ~wqt project: avoid grey infrastructure costs of $16 mill with $8 mill green infrastructure (tree planting)

OR ~wqt project: avoid grey infrastructure costs of $16 mill with $8 mill green infrastructure (tree planting) | Nature + Economics | Scoop.it

City of Medford has to reduce the temp of the Rogue River (presumably wastewater treatment plant outflows are warming up the water?) per OR DEQ (temp TMDL?). Instead of a projected grey infrastructure cost of $16 million (for cooling towers, holding ponds), the city signed a contract with the Freshwater Trust for $8 million to buy water quality credits that represent the required temperature reduction. How do they get that cooling? Trees n stuff. Modeled, monitored, all that good stuff.

Water Quality Trading Could Significantly Reduce Chesapeake Bay Cleanup Costs

Water Quality Trading Could Significantly Reduce Chesapeake Bay Cleanup Costs | Nature + Economics | Scoop.it
The study projected that nutrient credit trading could reduce projected costs for upgrading sewage plants by between 20 and 50 percent. Communities required to control their stormwater pollution might see as much as an 80 percent cost reduction if they are instead allowed to pay farmers to adopt conservation practices that would capture nutrients before they can reach waterways.
