Roasted Eggplant Meatballs | Annie Haven | Haven Brand | Scoop.it
I'm not usually one for a faux meatball: the texture is usually all wrong and flavor bland. That said, this little puppy is darn good. In fact, I wouldn't even classify it as faux. It stands on its...

The New Spider Flowers -- Good Just Got Great

The New Spider Flowers -- Good Just Got Great | Annie Haven | Haven Brand | Scoop.it
Bigger isn’t always better in gardening. Two new spider flowers prove the point. Their compact growth and continuous color make them two of the most impressive annuals Grumpy has admired this year. Native to South America, spider flower (Cleome hasslerana) has been a Southern favorite for ages. It gets its name from long stamens resembling spider legs that protrude […]

Give Me Gratitude or Give Me Debt

Give Me Gratitude or Give Me Debt | Annie Haven | Haven Brand | Scoop.it
Recently I posted a picture of myself in my kitchen, and I immediately started receiving generous messages from people wanting to help me “update” it. Along with their messages came pictures of how my kitchen could look, if I’d just put some effort and money into it. I’ve always loved my kitchen, but after seeing those pictures I found myself looking at it through new, critical eyes.

Bounty of Bells: How to Freeze Bell Peppers - The Garden Buzz

Bounty of Bells: How to Freeze Bell Peppers - The Garden Buzz | Annie Haven | Haven Brand | Scoop.it
Can you freeze bell peppers? Certainly. There are several ways but I like this quick and easy method I found on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln website. It's the same as the one I use to freeze berries so I savor summer even in the snowy winter. 'Candy Apple' Bell Peppers just starting to turn red, a great variety with thick walls I've been waiting patiently for my bell peppers to turn that gorgeous shade of red that gives color and sweetness to any recipe. Imagine my disappointment when I noticed that the plant was so weighed down with beautiful bells...

Five Easy Vegetables for Late Summer Sowing | Ohio Gardener eNewsletter

Five Easy Vegetables for Late Summer Sowing | Ohio Gardener eNewsletter | Annie Haven | Haven Brand | Scoop.it
Book end your growing season in the vegetable garden with cool-season crops including lettuce, spinach, radishes, beets and other leafy greens like mustard. These crops, commonly grown in early spring, can also be planted in late summer for a fall harvest.

August is the time to look around the vegetable garden for bare places to plant fall garden crops. You can make room for these vegetables by removing any plants which are no longer producing. Perhaps you still have some spring-planted lettuce and radishes that long ago bolted and set seed and you never got around to pulling them out? ...

Florida Couple Wins Fight For Front Yard Garden -

Florida Couple Wins Fight For Front Yard Garden - | Annie Haven | Haven Brand | Scoop.it
Even the big ag companies that produce our fruits and vegetables can engage in some misleading marketing, whether it’s a fib about what vine ripened means or deceptive “made with real fruit” claims. Not to mention that our food comes from all over the place. Tomatoes are often imported from Mexico; greens from China. This …
