12 Best Essential Oils That Should Be In Every Home

12 Best Essential Oils That Should Be In Every Home | Natural Living | Scoop.it

It seems that these days, almost everyone is talking about essential oils. But if all you know is that people rave about them and not much else, you’re probably not sure where to start. Essential oils, which are natural and highly concentrated, having been extracted directly from a flower, fruit, leaf, bark, seed or root of a plant or tree, offer remedies for all sorts of home and health issues. They can be used in a bath, for massage, in an essential oil diffuser (see this post for a review of the top 5 most popular) and more, as well as for use in homemade beauty and cleaning products. Many traditional hospitals, including Fort Worth Hospital in Texas and Tennessee’s Vanderbilt University Hospital, have begun taking advantage of the properties of essential oils to use them in treating anxiety, depression and even infections in patients. Certain essential oils have also been used by midwives to help lessen fear and anxiety during childbirth. A 2007 study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine suggested that women who used aromatherapy during labor reported less pain overall and were able to use fewer pain medications. So, now you know that benefits derived using essential oils aren’t only due to a placebo affect – they offer scientifically proven benefits, you probably really want to take advantage of them. If you’re just starting out with essential oils, you may want to try picking up just a few different types, and then building up your collection as you get used to blending and using them on a regular basis.

11 Reasons You Should Drink A Tbsp Of Apple Cider Vinegar Every Day

11 Reasons You Should Drink A Tbsp Of Apple Cider Vinegar Every Day | Natural Living | Scoop.it
You’ve probably heard the claims.  But even if you are aware of all that apple cider vinegar has to offer, you might find it hard to believe that just one food can offer so many benefits. Surprisingly (or maybe not) it’s true!  Drinking apple cider vinegar daily is a sure fire way to improve every aspect of your health and your life.

Raw, organic, unfiltered and unpasteurized apple cider vinegar (or ‘ACV’ for short) is one of the oldest and most useful remedies on Earth.  It contains a wealth of raw enzymes and beneficial bacteria which are responsible for the majority of it’s health benefits (and there are many!)  The following are 11 reasons that you should start drinking a modest amount of ACV every day.

Just keep in mind that you should never drink apple cider vinegar straight as it can burn your esophagus. Instead, mix one tablespoon with 8 ounces of water. If you don’t like the taste, use a straw to minimize contact with your taste buds. Adding a bit of raw honey can help too.

31 Minimalist Hacks - De-clutter Your Life In Just One Month

31 Minimalist Hacks - De-clutter Your Life In Just One Month | Natural Living | Scoop.it
Minimalists realize that the years we spend working, saving, paying a mortgage and needlessly accumulating a mass of ‘stuff’ don’t actually equate to happiness. They believe that our possessions only serve to distract us from what’s really important – living a full, meaningful and joyous life.

Today the average US person has as much individual space in their home as an entire 1950s family shared. Naturally, you would think these bigger houses could cope with all our material possessions but, scarily, there are now more self-storage facilities in America than McDonald’s restaurants!

At the same time, research says that Americans are more depressed now than they have been in decades.

Clearly, material goods don’t build happiness…so maybe minimalism is the way to go!

Why not check out these 31 ways to de-clutter your home and life and see if it works for you?

8 Unmistakable Signs Your Essential Oils Are FAKE

8 Unmistakable Signs Your Essential Oils Are FAKE | Natural Living | Scoop.it
It’s easy to purchase essential oils, but choosing a high quality essential oil can be anything but. When it comes to essential oils, it’s important to remember that going with the cheapest option isn’t always best. For effectiveness, they should be 100% pure, otherwise, you’re wasting your hard earned money, as low-quality oils don’t offer the benefits that a high-quality essential oil does.

Poor quality essential oils simply refers to oils that have been distilled from poor crops. They may have additives or have been handled improperly. With these types of oils, you might as well be putting water onto your skin – or, sometimes even worse as some poor quality oils have been adulterated and potentially come with harmful side effects. Ideally, your essential oil should be a bottle of potent liquid that’s been distilled from the flower, root, leaf, or rind of an aromatic plant.

So how do you know if you’re getting a fake essential oil instead of the real thing? These signs are all excellent clues to use to avoid getting ripped off.
Stephanie Jo Rountree's insight:
One of the best and most trusted suppliers of pure essential oils is Mountain Rose Herbs. Liberty Natural is another good supplier.

10 Reasons You Should Put Tea Tree Oil On Your Skin

10 Reasons You Should Put Tea Tree Oil On Your Skin | Natural Living | Scoop.it
Tea tree oil is one of the most extensively researched of all essential oils. Produced from a shrub-like tree known as Melaleuca in Australia, according to the University of Sydney, native aboriginals are believed to have taken advantage of its many healing benefits to treat skin conditions for thousands of years before chemist Arthur Penfold discovered its powerful antiseptic properties back in the 1920s.

Today, tea tree oil is renowned for its practically endless number of uses, particularly for the skin. It’s become an increasingly popular active ingredient in a wide variety of cosmetic products like skin and nail creams, massage oils and face wash, thanks to not only its natural antiseptic action but its potent anti-inflammatory abilities. There is no doubt that this oil is one that should be on the shelves of all medicine cabinets. In many cases, doctors of functional medicine will even prescribe this oil as an alternative to conventional medications as it’s just as effective, yet doesn’t come with the adverse side effects.

14 Epic Reasons Why Every Home Needs A Bottle Of Castor Oil

14 Epic Reasons Why Every Home Needs A Bottle Of Castor Oil | Natural Living | Scoop.it
Castor oil is derived from the seeds of the Ricinus communis plants that grow wild in wastelands across tropical regions. It is often grown as an ornamental garden plant in milder climates, and now cultivated on a large scale for biodiesel manufacture.

Castor oil has been around for a very long time, and has been widely used for medicinal purposes in its native lands spread across Africa, the Indian subcontinent and the Mediterranean basin. It is one of the first vegetable oils to be used for industrial purposes because of its high viscosity and lubricating property. In fact, the automotive lubricant company Castrol derives its name from castor oil.

Infamous as a laxative, many people consider castor oil a crude product. But this unique vegetable oil has so many wonderful uses that it deserves a place in every home.

7 Scary Essential Oil Dangers Not Enough People Know About

7 Scary Essential Oil Dangers Not Enough People Know About | Natural Living | Scoop.it
Essential oils offer a wide range of benefits for your health, beauty, household cleaning and more – there’s a reason so many people use them. In fact, it may seem like every other friend on your Facebook feed has been touting their miracle abilities.

But, beware, before you haphazardly slather on one of your friend’s favorites, that just because they’re natural, that doesn’t mean they don’t come without some risks. Essential oils do have lots of amazing powerful therapeutic properties, and there are lots of scientific studies to back that up, but they aren’t 100% safe. There are also more than a few essential oil resources online that give some blanket advice about their use that could potentially be dangerous.

Essential oils are very highly concentrated. Just a tiny amount of an essential oil typically has the quality of many cups of herbal tea from the same plant. For example, just a drop of peppermint oil is equal to roughly 26 cups of peppermint herbal tea. You’d probably never ingest that much tea, right? That’s a clue that it’s important to think carefully before consuming that equivalent amount of essential oil.

Before you start using essential oils on yourself, your family, or your pets, keep these dangers in mind, and note how to best avoid them.

18 Apple Cider Vinegar Hacks To Clean Every Room In Your Home

18 Apple Cider Vinegar Hacks To Clean Every Room In Your Home | Natural Living | Scoop.it
Apple cider vinegar has so many uses everyone should always have at least one bottle in the house (and if you don’t, you can get a giant bottle from here). It’s gotten a lot of press recently about its medicinal benefits, and offers a myriad of ways to use it in all sorts of recipes, but did you realize there are ways to use it to clean every room in your house?

Like all types of vinegar, apple cider vinegar, or ACV, offers powerful antimicrobial properties that are at least as effective as store-bought products without harmful chemical ingredients. In fact, when it comes to your health as well as the health of our planet this natural disinfectant is far superior and strong enough to handle just about any germy task. While it can be mixed with other natural cleaning ingredients like lemon juice, salt or essential oils, don’t mix it with baking soda as it neutralizes the acidity of the vinegar. According to Canada’s National Collaborating Centre for Environmental Health, the acid in vinegar crosses the cell membrane of bacteria and prompting a release of protons, which causes the cell to die.

Once you’ve read about the many ways to utilize ACV, you may never want to use those chemical cleaning solutions again.
