Katie Kintner's insight:

I stick with natural sugar, stevia or honey now. But be careful of honey--a lot of it is FAKE honey-flavored weird syrup stuff.

We are always looking for the "healthiest sugar" which quite likely may be an oxymoron! Currently, we take 1tsp of Manuka Honey Active 20+ daily, raw honey in tea, coconut sugar in coffee and maple syrup and cane sugar for cooking.

B-Well: Why Women in Perimenopause Need B-Vitamins - Healthline | Natural Health | Scoop.it
Magnolia Miller discusses how B vitamins may help ease symptoms of perimenopause.

Katie Kintner's insight:
ENERGY, MENTAL HEALTH, HEART HEALTH AND MORE

B-Complex provides all eight essential B vitamins necessary for converting the food we eat into energy. B vitamins help improve your cognitive performance and are also essential in the synthesis of DNA and new cells. The B vitamins (folic acid, B6, and B12) promote a healthy cardiovascular system by helping to lower homocysteine levels in the blood.

Omega-3 Dietary Supplements Pass Blood-Brain Barrier - Science Daily (press release)

Omega-3 Dietary Supplements Pass Blood-Brain Barrier - Science Daily (press release) | Natural Health | Scoop.it
Omega-3 Dietary Supplements Pass Blood-Brain Barrier
Science Daily (press release)
Dec.
Katie Kintner's insight:

New research from Karolinska Institutet in Sweden shows that omega-3 fatty acids in dietary supplements can cross the blood brain barrier in people with Alzheimer's disease, affecting known markers for both the disease itself and inflammation. The findings are presented in the Journal of Internal Medicine, and strengthen the evidence that omega-3 may benefit certain forms of this seriously debilitating disease.

Andy James's curator insight, April 26, 2014 9:36 AM

The body cannot do without omega-3 fatty acids, hence it is dubbed 'essential', crucial more like, if you ask me! An optimal dose of omega-3 fats is enough to keep the brain healthy.

Keeping the brain healthy is vital as we age. We cannot do anything about getting older, but there are certain things we can do, certain things we can take (like krill oil, which are high in omega-3's) and certain paths we can follow, that will make getting older that much easier.

This includes warding off diseases like dementia and Alzheimer's, which are directly linked to breakdown in brain tissue. Protect your brain with omega-3 fatty acids and your brain will thank you.

New research shows no solid benefit, even some risks in vitamin supplements
kfor.com
More than half of Americans take some sort of vitamin supplement, spending billions of dollars on the pills each year.
Katie Kintner's insight:

Again, this is NOT true of Shaklee supplements, made with all natural ingredients, gluten free and no GMOs. Shaklee supplements are so good they are classified as food, not chemicals.  Read the labels at your local vitamin store--see what you are letting yourself in for when you DON'T know where your supplements are coming from or what's REALLY in them.  Shaklee supplements give you what you pay for in a way that your body can most efficiently utilize it.  If you want to know more, get in touch. http://www.thekintners.com

Why You Binge and How to Stop - Diet and Nutrition Center - Everyday Health | Natural Health | Scoop.it
Bingeing can occur due to external reasons or internal ones. Avoiding extreme diets, limiting access to tempting foods, and getting therapy may help.
Katie Kintner's insight:

I'm a reforming binger. Every time I was under stress or even just bored, I would head for the kitchen and eat everything I could get my hands on.  Now I'm following a more reasonable diet, eating more fruit and veggies and staying away from trigger foods (though I still love my popcorn).

News Flash: Review Finds Diet Soda to be Health Destroyer

News Flash: Review Finds Diet Soda to be Health Destroyer | Natural Health | Scoop.it
Researchers from Purdue reviewed a dozen studies published within the last five years on the health risks of consuming diet soda. The news is not positive.

Via Troy Mccomas (troy48)
Katie Kintner's insight:

I used to consume around 2-3 32 oz diet sodas 4-5 days a week!  Now it's a treat once or twice a week and I reduced the cup size to "medium" (LOL!) .  Instead, if I have to have a cold flavored drink, I go with unsweetened ice tea.

Eating nuts tied to fewer cancer, heart disease deaths

Eating nuts tied to fewer cancer, heart disease deaths | Natural Health | Scoop.it

People who eat a diet rich in nuts, including peanuts, are less likely to die from heart disease or cancer, new research suggests.

The more nuts consumed, the greater the apparent benefit, according to the report. It included data from nurses and other health professionals who have been tracked since the 1980s.

Katie Kintner's insight:

Damn! I like this article because I LOVE nuts and because of the fat, have really curtailed my intake to an occasional treat.

So Many Supplements, So Little Regulation

When asked this week about Craze, a press officer for the U.S.
Katie Kintner's insight:

I am a Shaklee Independent Distributor. The reason I got involved with Shaklee is that when I worked as a clerk at a local pharmacy, the vitamin shelves were a crap shoot. One supplement was NOT the same as the next and the consumer and the clerk (me) couldn't always find the best deals. So often people would settle for the "cheapest" without realizing that they could be completely wasting their money on an ineffective product. I went to Shaklee because it is all natural, consistent, has a high absorption rate and guaranteed.
