CBD-WHO Report Discusses Linkages between Biodiversity and Health - Natural Resources Policy & Practice

CBD-WHO Report Discusses Linkages between Biodiversity and Health - Natural Resources Policy & Practice | Natural Capital | Scoop.it
The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have released a report titled 'Connecting Global Priorities - Biodiversity and Human Health,' which reviews the current knowledge on linkages between biodiversity and human health, and the impact of a decline in biodiversity and ecosystem services on health. Based on knowledge from a wide range of scientific disciplines, this publication provides a comprehensive overview of the complex relationships between biodiversity and human health in thematic areas. It also profiles linkages to other global concerns, including climate change and to the Post-2015 Sustainable Development Agenda, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Nuno Gaspar de Oliveira's insight:

With regard to cross-cutting issues, the report reviews knowledge on the relevance of biodiversity-health linkages for the following global concerns: climate change; increasing resilience and disaster risk reduction; and sustainable consumption for a growing world population. The report further reviews ways to integrate health and biodiversity strategies and identifies needs for further research.

Nature gives us everything free – let's put it at the heart of everyday economic life

Nature gives us everything free – let's put it at the heart of everyday economic life | Natural Capital | Scoop.it
With a population increase of 10m predicted in the UK alone, natural capital faces challenges as never before. This is what to do to compensate
Nuno Gaspar de Oliveira's insight:

But the really big gains come from three policy changes, all of which have an impact on the choices we make. The first is compensation: the idea that if damage is done to our natural capital, there must be compensating increases elsewhere. The second is pollution taxes, paying for the damage caused from carbon, pesticides and other emissions. The third is a nature fund, created from the running down of the non-renewables like North Sea oil and gas.

Natural capital: the 21st century's elephant in the boardroom - Money Management | Natural Capital | Scoop.it
“Natural” capital will be as vital a business concern in the 21st century as adequate financial capital was in the last century. How can businesses account for this new “elephant in the boardroom”?
Nuno Gaspar de Oliveira's insight:

Accountants can contribute by supporting the adoption of natural capital accounting in their organisations and ensuring such externalities are reflected in data collection, decision making, risk management and reporting.

The Sharing Economy: Users Desire 'Access Over Ownership' - eMarketer

The Sharing Economy: Users Desire 'Access Over Ownership' - eMarketer | Natural Capital | Scoop.it
The sharing economy continues to expand as more consumers choose "access over ownership." As ownership loses its value—many view it as a burden and more expensive—this new business model presents consumers with cost-effective, convenient options that inspire a sense of trust and community.
Nuno Gaspar de Oliveira's insight:

PwC noted that the definition of the sharing economy is still broad and uncertain, and in its studied defined it as “an emergent ecosystem that monetizes underutilized assets or forgoes the purchase of those assets altogether, in favor of borrowing, renting or serving up microskills in exchange for access or money,”

State of nature in the EU: biodiversity still being eroded, but some local improvements observed — European Environment Agency (EEA)

State of nature in the EU: biodiversity still being eroded, but some local improvements observed — European Environment Agency (EEA) | Natural Capital | Scoop.it
The majority of habitats and species in Europe have an unfavourable conservation status despite significant improvements for many species in recent years, according to a new technical report published by the European Environment Agency (EEA) today. The report presents the most comprehensive European overview on the conservation status and trends of the habitats and species covered by the European Union’s (EU) two nature directives. Building on the reports submitted by EU member states, the report contributes to policy discussions in the context of the EU 2020 Biodiversity Strategy.
Nuno Gaspar de Oliveira's insight:

The results are mixed but clear. When implemented well, conservation measures work and improve the status of habitats and species on the ground. Such improvements remain limited and patchy, and unfortunately Europe’s biodiversity is still being eroded overall and the pressures continue.

IUCN - A role for nature based solutions in the EU Circular Economy package ?

IUCN - A role for nature based solutions in the EU Circular Economy package ? | Natural Capital | Scoop.it
Europe is resource-poor, and businesses, policy-makers and citizens are increasingly aware of wasteful consumption and production patterns, as well as the continuing destruction of the continent’s natural capital. The ‘circular economy’, a system in which nothing goes to waste but is fed back as a valuable resource into a closed loop, would not only have considerable environmental benefits, but would also give Europe a competitive edge, inspiring new economic development and job creation.
Nuno Gaspar de Oliveira's insight:

“Using nature and restoring the natural cycle and ecological functions of soil, water and nutrients, to address these challenges not only helps to increase resilience but is also a smart investment leading to significant economic and social benefits. Improving ecosystems and biodiversity and restoring degraded areas will pay off,”

Watch: Satellite time lapse reveals humanity's global footprint

Here's what we look like from space.
Nuno Gaspar de Oliveira's insight:

in the 1970s, some forward-thinking NASA scientists put an Earth-observing satellite into orbit. At an altitude of 570 miles, it photographed the entire planet every 18 days, circling Earth 14 times a day and sending the data back to ground stations.

Forty years later, this satellite and its successors have created the longest continuous record of our planet's surface. By stringing the images together, NASA and the US Geological Survey have shown how rapidly and how profoundly humans are changing the face of Earth.

The ocean is the world's 7th largest economy - UPI.com | Natural Capital | Scoop.it
A new report by the WWF places the value of the world's oceans at a whopping $24 trillion. If the ocean was a country, it would be the seventh largest economy.
Nuno Gaspar de Oliveira's insight:

Researchers placed the annual value of the ocean's goods and services at $2.5 trillion. Butthe report claims the ocean's health, and therefore its economic value, is declining.

"Our oceans are the planet's natural capital, a 'factory' producing an incredible array of goods and services that we all want and need," Brad Ack, senior vice president for oceans at WWF, explained in a press release. "But every day we are degrading, over-consuming, and polluting this productive asset to a point of ever diminishing returns."
