Native Americans Outraged Over Twilight Action Alert

Native Americans Outraged Over Twilight Action Alert | Native Americans and Media | Scoop.it

Native Americans are proud of their presence in film. That is the reason for the backlash Taylor Lautner, our generation's "Native American" heartthrob, who claims to have Native American heritage. Noel Magee's curator insight, March 29, 2015 8:05 PM

Such a famous and prestigious film is being called out for their discrimination throughout the process of choosing actors for the film. Since this is one of very few films with a strong Native American theme, you would think that the majority of the Native roles would be played by Natives. However, Natives are enraged that Filipino and Asians were selected to play these roles over many individuals with a Native background. It seems that the media preferred younger, more physically appealing actors rather than ethnically correct ones. As the article says, ".. it sends the message that Natives are not good enough to represent themselves." With such strong, heroic portraying of Native tribes, it is disrespectful that producers were not confident enough in Natives to play the roles that they so rightfully deserve. This is yet another way for white Americans to maintain their power over other races and ethnicities.
