Holyrood expenses payouts include Labour MSP who bought public speaking guide 'for dummies'

Holyrood expenses payouts include Labour MSP who bought public speaking guide 'for dummies' | Race & Crime UK | Scoop.it
LABOUR MSP Anne McTaggart was one of a number of MSPs whose claims have been made public after a rise of more than £900,000 in expenses in the last year.

A NEWLY-elected MSP used taxpayers’ money to buy a public speaking guide for “dummies”.

Labour’s Anne McTaggart was left embarrassed yesterday after the latest batch of Holyrood expenses revealed the purchase.

The Glasgow MSP spent £141 on books just a month after being elected in May last year.

The titles included Public Speaking and Presentation for Dummies, The Scottish Parliament: An Introduction and several books on Labour politician Barbara Castle.

The figures show MSPs claimed just over £12.8million in expenses last year, up 8.2 per cent on the previous year.

The rise of £969,436 to £12,818,835 is due to winding-up expenses claimed by MSPs who either stood down or were voted out of the Scottish Parliament at the 2011 elections.

Excluding these costs, MSPs’ total expenses were just over £11.3million, a decrease of £500,000 on the previous year.

A total of 48 MSPs claimed winding-up expenses, which include staff salary costs, staff redundancy and office and accommodation costs.

Who claimed what? A list of what MSPs claimed
Last year’s top spender was Orkney MSP Liam McArthur, who claimed £52,878.

He was followed by Highlands and Islands MSP Dave Thomson and Na h-Eileanan an Iar (Western Isles) MSP Alasdair Allan. All three made substantial travel claims.

SNP MSP Annabelle Ewing claimed the lowest amount – £3460.

First Minister Alex Salmond claimed £13,361 for items including office rent, travel costs including mileage, and phone bills.

Labour leader Johann Lamont spent £17,831, which included hotel stays in Edinburgh as well as taxi and train fares.

The Glasgow MSP spent £800 on website costs and more than £1050 on surgery advertising.

Conservative leader Ruth Davidson claimed £20,440.

Her expenses include £148 in June 2011, for staff training entitled “dealing with difficult people”.

Lib Dem leader Willie Rennie claimed £19,738, including £361 on return flights from Edinburgh to Heathrow in July 2011.

Green Party co-leader Patrick Harvie spent £24,266 on expenses including rail passes and hotel stays.

More Muslim enrichment in Scotland

More Muslim enrichment in Scotland | Race & Crime UK | Scoop.it

A Muslim man has been found guilty of raping a woman in a hotel room and knocking out another victim's teeth in a separate street assault months earlier in the Scottish town of Fife.

Mohamed Ben El Hassan, 35, attacked and raped the lady after meeting her and her sister in a nightclub in Dunfermline.

El Hassan, from Dunfermline, pleaded not guilty to assaulting and raping her on 1 January 2011 at the Travel Lodge.

He had also denied causing horrendous injuries and disfigurement to Katherine Shade on 8 August 2010 in Dunfermline.

The woman who was raped said that El Hassan had leapt on top of her. She told the court she wanted to scream but commented: "I couldn't breathe."

"He was licking my face then he tried to bite my mouth open. He bit my lip. I couldn't push him off, I just couldn't," she said. She added: "I just felt pain."

The woman informed the High Court in Edinburgh: "He just forced himself on me."

She said she envisaged the attack lasted several minutes before her sister came in and apprehended El Hassan.

An English teacher, Ms Shade, 24, was studying for a Masters degree and living in Edinburgh at the time she was assaulted five months earlier.

She had gone back to Dunfermline to go on an evening out with friends when she was attacked while walking alone.

Ms Shade told the court: "As soon as I was on the ground I got this blow to the face. I got a kick in the face."

She said she realised her teeth had been kicked out by the monster.

A judge rejected a bid to continue El Hassan's bail and remanded him in custody ahead of sentencing next month.

Lord Brailsford called for a pre-sentencing report to be prepared and instructed that he should be put on the sex offenders register.

'Asian' Sex attack on woman with baby | Race & Crime UK | Scoop.it
Police hunt a man who indecently assaulted a woman in a park while she was with her five-month-old child.

The 25-year-old woman was sitting in Dean Park, Kilmarnock, with her baby in a pram, when she was approached by a man who asked her the time.

He then grabbed her and began to take off his clothes before being disturbed by a dog walker at 11:30 on Sunday.

Police said the man was described as Asian, with dark features, and having a "dirty appearance".

He had matted black hair which was brushed forward, and was wearing a dark navy Nike top or training jacket with a white Nike tick on the left hand side.

'Frightening experience'

The man was also wearing black Adidas tracksuit bottoms with three stripes down the leg, and white trainers with large looped laces. He wore black thick padded hiking-style gloves.

The woman was uninjured during the incident but left badly shaken.

Det Insp Scott McClelland, of Strathclyde Police, said: "This was a very frightening experience indeed for this young mum who was enjoying a morning visit to the park with her young baby.

"Extensive enquiries are ongoing into the incident. However, I would like to reassure the public that this type of incident is unusual.

"We are continuing to search the area and would like to appeal to anyone who may have information to contact us."

Det Insp McClelland added: "We know that the man was disturbed during his attack by a particular dog walker calling for their pet, by the name of Brodie.

"I would like to appeal to the owner of that dog who was in the park at the time of incident, as they may have important information that may be able to help us with our enquiries."

Major TB scare for Scotland

News that a Romanian immigrant worker has been diagnosed after being rushed to hospital for treatment of the deadly tuberculosis disease has caused great concern amongst the workforce and the local population.

All staff at the large meat processing factory has been tested and injections by doctors have been started.

Members of Scottish BNP in February picketed the factory for employing many staff from abroad. The factory used to be called Marshalls and was a major employer of local people It was purchased by a Dutch company called Vion.

The factory is believed to supply major supermarket chain stores with chicken products.

Local people have described the present situation as shocking and terrifying. A local woman in Broxburn reported today “I used to work at that factory for 5 years. Then most of us local workers lost our jobs, when an agency started employing immigrants from Eastern Europe. These immigrants are not only stealing our jobs but are bringing deadly diseases like TB into our Country”

It would also appear that news of this deadly disease found in the factory, has failed to be considered newsworthy to the British public at the time the report came to us.

Readers may be aware that in the British Isles TB had been eradicated amongst British people. Today in our country British children are no longer vaccinated for T.B. It now seems to be back on the increase with the flood of Eastern Europeans coming to Britain.
