A MAN who took a young girl and threatened to kill her in a series of chilling phone calls to her mother was last night behind bars.
Javed Khaliq held the child in a cold and filthy garage for hours overnight while he repeatedly made contact with her frantic mother.
Khaliq, 33, warned the woman: “You’re never going to see her again… the next time you see her, she will be in a body bag with me.”
In another of the 62 calls he made over three hours, he said: “The only person who is going to see me and your daughter is God.”
Khaliq later told the woman to say goodbye to her daughter as he counted down from five to one then switched off his mobile phone.
Police had been called by the mother to her home in the Stockton area, and officers heard some of the menacing calls she received.
John Gillette, prosecuting, told Teesside Crown Court that in one, Khaliq prompted the toddler to be abusive towards her, making her repeat things such as “f*** you mammy, you slag.”
Judge Howard Crowson jailed Khaliq for 12 months yesterday after telling him the threats he made were extremely frightening.
The judge accepted it would have been unlikely Khaliq would harm the child, but said her mother would have been terrified.
“You finished with a rather chilling comment, saying, ‘Say goodbye to your daughter’ and the countdown,”
Judge Crowson said.
“One can only imagine what effect that probably had upon her mum… [but] I conclude that you would never have carried out the threat.”
Khaliq, of Duchess Road, Crumpsall, Manchester, admitted making threats to kill and child cruelty as well as two unconnected drugs charges.
Mr Gillette told the court that the cruelty charge related to Khaliq abandoning the child for a short time in the garage while he went to a shop.
Duncan McReddie, mitigating, said Khaliq had drunk vodka before the incident, and acted completely out of character.
The court heard that he will be banned from working with children after he is released from prison and may be deported.
But Mr McReddie said Khaliq believes he is a legitimate UK citizen after twice marrying British women.
