Detectives investigating Rochdale child sex ring make two more arrests

Detectives investigating Rochdale child sex ring make two more arrests | Race & Crime UK | Scoop.it
Detectives who smashed the Rochdale child sex grooming ring have arrested two more suspects.

Two men, both 33, were held earlier this week on suspicion of rape and sexual assault. They were bailed pending further inquiries. The men, who are from Rochdale and are understood to be Asian, are suspected of abusing one of the five girls who gave evidence during the trial at Liverpool, which ended in the jailing of nine men. The trial heard the girl was plied with drink before being raped or sexually abused from the age of 15 over a period of two years. The girl has told officers she was also abused by four other men, who she knew only by nicknames, in 2008 or 2009. Although the claims were not part of the court case, detectives have continued to investigate her allegations and now believe they have established the identities of those four men. At least one of them is thought to have fled to Pakistan. One senior detective said: "Our inquiry continues. There are other potential victims coming forward. The positive side of the court case is that people want to speak to us. We’ll have to see where that takes us." The two suspects arrested earlier this week have not been quizzed in connection with allegations of a second child sex case in the town. It was revealed last week how nine men had been arrested over allegations from another girl who has told officers she was sexually abused over a six-year period from the age of 12.

Exclusive: Men arrested as police launch new child sex probe in Rochdale

Exclusive: Men arrested as police launch new child sex probe in Rochdale | Race & Crime UK | Scoop.it
Police who smashed the Rochdale child sex ring believe they have uncovered a SECOND grooming scandal in the town. The M.E.N. can today reveal that several men have been arrested on suspicion of sexually abusing the same girl.

Police who smashed the Rochdale child sex ring believe they have uncovered a SECOND grooming scandal in the town. The M.E.N. can today reveal that several men have been arrested on suspicion of sexually abusing the same girl. The alleged abuse is believed to have taken place over a six-year period when the girl was in her teens. Sources described her as ‘extremely vulnerable’. Detectives have carried out video interviews with the girl, who told them she knew the men only by nicknames. A string of suspects were tracked down by officers and a number of arrests have now been made. The men in question are all from Asian and Afro-Caribbean backgrounds, the M.E.N. understands. Detectives are exploring possible links between the men, although none have been established so far. A file of evidence is expected to handed over to the Crown Prosecution Service within weeks. The news comes just days after nine Asian men from Rochdale and Oldham were jailed over the sexual exploitation of girls as young as 13. The gang was convicted on the back of evidence from five witnesses, who suffered horrific abuse between 2008-2010. The team of detectives who investigated the case encountered 47 other girls who they believe were also the victim of sexual abuse. One is the alleged victim behind the latest arrests. The suspects do not include any of the men jailed this week. One senior detective told the M.E..: “Enquiries are continuing. Just because the trial has finished and nine men have been convicted does not mean the operation has stopped. “We are continuing to chip away, gaining the confidence of the girls.” The conclusion of the case this week sent shockwaves through the Rochdale community and sparked a major debate about whether the crimes were racially motivated. Judge Gerald Clifton, jailing the nine, suggested they had targeted their victims because they were ‘not of your community or religion’. But police and political leaders denied the crimes were about race – saying the men had targeted their victims simply because they were vulnerable.

Two men held over claims of female mutilation offered in the UK | Race & Crime UK | Scoop.it

Two men were arrested today by police investigating claims that female genital mutilation is being offered in the UK.
West Midlands Police said a 55-year-old and a 61-year-old were arrested when officers from the force’s public protection unit attended three separate addresses in Birmingham.
Detective Inspector Caroline Marsh said: 'We are still in the very early stages of this investigation but I hope this morning’s action sends out a clear message about how seriously we are taking these allegations.'

She added: 'We are actively working together with our partner agencies to investigate reports of female genital mutilation (FGM) and raise awareness of the practice amongst both professionals and communities, in order to identify and safeguard potential victims.
'I want to reassure people that we thoroughly investigate all allegations of FGM and I would encourage anyone who may have any information about this illegal practice to contact police.'
The men were arrested on suspicion of offences contrary to the Female Genital Mutilation Act 2003.
Officers went to properties on Stratford Road, Sparkhill, Trafalgar Road, Moseley and Kingstanding Road, Kingstanding, at around 9am.
A force spokesman said an investigation was launched following the publication of an article in The Sunday Times on April 22.

Facing the death penalty

Facing the death penalty, the pregnant Briton caught smuggling £3.2 million of heroin in Pakistan

A pregnant British woman could face the death penalty in Pakistan after she was caught trying to smuggle heroin worth £3.2million.

Khadija Shah, 25, was attempting to return to Birmingham with her two children when she was arrested by police officers who uncovered 140lb of the drug concealed inside clothes in three suitcases.

She claimed she took the bags as a favour for men she met in Pakistan and did not know what was in them. Authorities in the capital Islamabad suspect the men were gangsters.

The haul is believed to be the biggest of the Class A drug ever recovered at Islamabad airport destined for the streets of Britain.

Under Pakistani law, anyone arrested with drugs weighing more than 22lb (10kg) faces at least life imprisonment and at most the death penalty.

Hillfields internet cafe raided by counter-terrorism police

Hillfields internet cafe raided by counter-terrorism police | Race & Crime UK | Scoop.it
A HILLFIELDS internet cafe was raided by counter-terrorism police in Coventry, which led to two arrests.

Two men - aged 42 and 45 - are being quizzed by anti-terror cops after being arrested on suspicion of raising cash to fund terrorism abroad.

The early morning swoop was part of a major operation which also saw five other arrests in Cardiff and London.

Officers from the Metropolitan Police counter-terrorism command team raided a home in Coventry at about 6am on Tuesday.

They arrested two men on suspicion of “helping fund a terrorist organisation overseas and laundering the proceeds of crime for that purpose”.

They are suspected of exporting the stimulant khat to the USA and Canada, where it is illegal. It is not banned in this country.

Police said they believed that cash made from the operation is being used to fund terrorism.

Searches continued at the unspecified address in Coventry where the arrests were made throughout the day and search warrants were also issued for other properties in the city, including a business premises.

The City Internet & Call Centre in Victoria Square, Hillfields was searched by police at about 10.30am.

The owner of the centre, who did not want to give his name, said another property in Hillfields had also been searched by police.

He said: “The officers came in here and told me they had a warrant to search the property.

“I was closed for about an hour and a half while they looked around and asked me some questions but I don’t know anything about the arrests.

“They took one of my computers and said it needed to be taken under the terrorism act.

"They didn’t tell me anything about what they were looking for but said they would check it over and bring it back in a few days.”

Officers from America’s Department of Homeland Security and the UK Border Agency were also involved in the operation.

The other arrests included a 45-year-old woman and a 49-year-old man from Croydon, South London two men aged 30 and 47 from Brent, North London and a 40-year-old man from Cardiff.

All seven were last night being held at a London police station for questioning.

A spokesman for Metropolitan Police said the searches were ongoing and no further arrests had been made.

Khat, grown in many parts of Africa, is popular in Somali communities.

Although legal in the UK, it is illegal in many parts of Europe.

It has been suggested that yesterday’s terror raids were linked to the use of khat trade to raise funds for Somalia-based terrorist group al-Shabaab, which has links with Islamist group al-Qaeda.
