Two Manchester policemen in court accused of giving false evidence during EDL and UAF protest

Two policemen accused of giving false evidence about an English Defence League and Unite Against Fascism march in Bolton appeared in court today.

The Greater Manchester Police serving officers Inspector Robert Cantrell and Constable Alan Glover are on trial charged with perverting the course of justice.

The pair are suspected of giving untruthful evidence that led to the arrest of a man during the protest in March 2010.

The man was charged with a public order offence during the EDL and UAF’s march.

Both officers appeared in York Crown Court to give their names and dates of birth – they will appear again on September 17.

Yawning cop who seemed to sum up how the grooming gang victims were not taken seriously

Yawning cop who seemed to sum up how the grooming gang victims were not taken seriously | Race & Crime UK | Scoop.it
It was a brave decision by the first victim to come forward to police – finally breaking her silence to tell officers of the horrors she had endured.

But, while recounting the abuse she suffered, an officer conducting the police interview let out a loud yawn before continuing with his questions. The moment, captured on video recordings of her interviews and shown to the court, seemed to sum up how the vulnerable young girl was not taken seriously during the initial investigation. The girl was first interviewed the day after she had been arrested for smashing the glass freezer cabinet at the Balti House in August, 2008. She broke down in tears as she provided graphic details of being plied with vodka before being raped or forced to have sex – and how she was shared among other men. The girl was interviewed a second time a week later. She spoke about looking at the wall and seeing a child’s clock with an angel on it as she was being raped on a mattress in a room above a takeaway by Kabeer Hassan, who she had been provided to as a ‘treat’ for him. The interviewing officer repeatedly asked her why she placed herself in jeopardy. He said: "Do you not feel you were putting yourself in a compromising position given what’s happened previously?" "Yes, (the older girl) was telling me to go," she answered. The officer said: "Why didn’t you say no to her?" "I don’t know," the girl meekly replied. After Hassan and the older man, who cannot be named, were arrested and bailed, the girl was brought back in for two more interviews in January, 2009. This prompted police to quiz the two suspects again and officers now had damning DNA evidence that suggested the older man did have sex with her. His far-fetched explanation was that the victim may have swapped underwear with a young girl he admitted he was having sex with. The barely-credible response did not prevent him being released on bail a second time along with Hassan. The girl had to undergo a fifth police interview in September 2009 and then a sixth in February last year before her attackers were eventually charged. She had also reported the abuse to a member of the NHS crisis intervention team in January 2009.

Detectives investigating Rochdale child sex ring make two more arrests

Detectives investigating Rochdale child sex ring make two more arrests | Race & Crime UK | Scoop.it
Detectives who smashed the Rochdale child sex grooming ring have arrested two more suspects.

Two men, both 33, were held earlier this week on suspicion of rape and sexual assault. They were bailed pending further inquiries. The men, who are from Rochdale and are understood to be Asian, are suspected of abusing one of the five girls who gave evidence during the trial at Liverpool, which ended in the jailing of nine men. The trial heard the girl was plied with drink before being raped or sexually abused from the age of 15 over a period of two years. The girl has told officers she was also abused by four other men, who she knew only by nicknames, in 2008 or 2009. Although the claims were not part of the court case, detectives have continued to investigate her allegations and now believe they have established the identities of those four men. At least one of them is thought to have fled to Pakistan. One senior detective said: "Our inquiry continues. There are other potential victims coming forward. The positive side of the court case is that people want to speak to us. We’ll have to see where that takes us." The two suspects arrested earlier this week have not been quizzed in connection with allegations of a second child sex case in the town. It was revealed last week how nine men had been arrested over allegations from another girl who has told officers she was sexually abused over a six-year period from the age of 12.

When 'sorry' isn't good enough.....Police, Town Hall and CPS just as guilty of child abuse

When 'sorry' isn't good enough.....Police, Town Hall and CPS just as guilty of child abuse | Race & Crime UK | Scoop.it

Police, town hall and CPS chiefs have all apologised for the multiple failures that allowed the abuse of the girls to continue for almost TWO YEARS after it was first reported.

Assistant Chief Constable Steve Heywood, from Greater Manchester Police, Rochdale council leader Colin Lambert and the north west’s chief prosecutor, Nazir Afzal, all admitted there were failings in the way each authority handled the child sex grooming case.

The first terrified victim initially confided in police in August 2008 – telling officers she was being plied with drink and repeatedly raped by a string of men.

She even provided them with her underwear, which carried traces of one of her attacker's DNA.

Two members of the grooming gang – Kabeer Hassan and the 59-year-old man who cannot be named – were arrested and released on bail.

But it took police 11 months to compile a file of evidence for the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) – after interviewing her on four separate occasions.

And then, in July 2009, an ‘experienced’ CPS lawyer ruled the victim was ‘not credible’ and decided that the two men who raped her should be released without charge.
