Interview: Exploring the surreal storytelling of The Dream Machine with director Anders Gustafsson | Narrative Tech | Scoop.it
The Dream Machine is a quirky point-and-click indie project by Cockroach Inc. What makes it so special? Well, the aesthetic,...
RainboWillis's insight:

Point and click adventure walks the line between game and story more perfectly, for me, than most other video games, which emphasize the interactivity over the story. This looks pretty interesting, and I am going to have to try it out.

The DoJ looks to re-write the e-book marketplace | FutureBook | Narrative Tech | Scoop.it
RainboWillis's insight:

A bit of corporate jostling, and I wonder what (if any) consequences heralded for the creator-end of the publishing industries, Music, Writing, etc.

Fair numbers of dreamers out there seem to be dreaming a similar artistic utopia, in which the creators are speaking directly to their audiences without the need of middlemen, and the process for this (as yet fantastical) revolution would be preceded, so the dreamers say, by a scrum for diminishing market space, price-fixing for shortterm growth, and big name writers putting books out completely on their own.

Compfight / A Flickr Search Tool | Narrative Tech | Scoop.it
Search engine for visual inspiration and free stock photos for the advertising community including images of creative commons and public domain.
RainboWillis's insight:

Useful search tool for images doesn't effectively, at least in my experience, filter the Commercially Licensed images from the CC images as it seems like it should, considering that the option to do so is a part of the search engine. Still, I think I will be using this in the future when looking for a suitable image. It is fast, and dredges up copious options.

Cool bundle for a good price. An example of how transmedia may be less of a planned phenomena than a lens to appreciate cumulative works. Here we have graphic novels, games, audiobooks and more. Pretty cool.

The Digital Rocking Chair's curator insight, August 1, 2013 3:44 PM

Dan Berger:  "Mike Vogel’s Phrenic is a science fiction and transmedia narrative that approaches cross-platform storytelling as a medium in its own right. Phrenic tells the story of Alison Taylor, a woman either on the edge of mental breakdown or the cusp of a revelation that will change her world forever. In seven days Alison Taylor will kill her husband. [...] We asked Mike to talk to us about creating Phrenic and the current state of transmedia storytelling."

Html : Storify: How the Courier covered the two missing girls case | Narrative Tech | Scoop.it
Two girls -- Elizabeth Collins, 8, and Lyric Cook, 10 -- are first reported missing from Evansdale. They are last seen at 12:15 p.m. in downtown Evansdale. Their bicycles are recovered at Meyers Lake in Evansdale around 4 p.m.
RainboWillis's insight:

If we are to look at the future of narrative news as distilled in two examples, then I see more promise in this than in NYTimes Snowfall. Though, to be fair, this story had the benefit of being a live document in and of itself, which is more friendly to transmedia than an event when has come and gone generally is.

RainboWillis's insight:

In my mind, it's all about the storytelling tools. Rooms like eLearning & Distance Education's Media Room should be popping up everywhere; my other Topic, Bright Future Library, does a lot to cover how these kinds of creative spaces should be appearing in libraries, especially. In this instance, we're targeting faculty's need for such tools, moreso than students. But I will be looking into how we can serve that latter demographic's need, as well.

RainboWillis's insight:

How do authors get their books out there without big-name big-pocket publishers? I have never been a so-called publisher shopper for literature, but for music, I must admit, a Blue Note logo may be enough to get me to buy the record. Established authors are publishing their work entirely on their own, but then they are already established, with thousands of visits to their websites every day.

So how do new authors get their work seen?

Enter Libboo, a start-up that is trying to build an online community for just that purpose. I just joined, and will keep y'all informed if it seems to be working or not.

Witcher 3 Dev: Storytelling Not About "Number of Outcomes"

Witcher 3 Dev: Storytelling Not About "Number of Outcomes" | Narrative Tech | Scoop.it
Executive producer John Mamais says The Witcher 3 will deliver a combination of choice and "gripping" storytelling.
RainboWillis's insight:

Mamai's deconstruction of the open-ended race reminds me of a discussion we had awhile back in my office about "immersion" in narrative. Ultimately, it came out that some of the people in the room felt strongly that an immersive, narrative experience is, necessarily, passive. We cannot engage in storytelling ourselves if we are to be bewitched as only someone listening to the story can be bewitched (pun intended).

Perhaps Mamais doesn't go far enough: storytelling is absolutely about the "number of outcomes," but not in the way that many sandbox games think these days. Rather, storytelling is about limiting those outcomes to an aesthetically pleasing few. Otherwise it isn't storytelling; it is merely the rhizome.
