Types of Load Banks 1 Resistive load bank. 2 Reactive load bank. 3 Capacitive load bank. 1. Resistive Load Bank This is the most common type of load bank used Resistive load bank proves equivalent loading of bothgenerator and prime moves The amount of load applied by load bank to the generator, the sameamount of load is applied to the engine under test on AC/DC dynamometer. The resistive load bank creates the load by the conversion of electrical energy to heat by means ofresistors. This heat must be dissipated from the load bank, or by air or by water, by forced means orconvection. Normally on small DC/AC dynamometers the load banks are dipped into the water tank. Thevariation in load is acheived by switching the number of resistances in the circuit.2. Reactive Load Bank A reactive load includes inductive (lagging power factor) and/ or capacitive (leading power factor) loads.DYNAMOMETER 147Iron-core elements which act as inductive load when used in conjunction with resistive load bank create a lagging power factor.3.Capacitive Load Bank The capacitive load bank offers the leading power factor loads. These types of load banks are not verycommon in engine test bed.
