Carol Mortensen has nearly twenty-three years of educational experience. She began as a substitute teacher as she worked toward her degree. Upon graduation, Carol began teaching middle school Math and Algebra I and served as the technology liaison for her campus. She served as a teacher for 16 years and was lucky to have taught at Hillcrest Middle School, a 1:1 campus where every student was issued a laptop computer. She also worked as an Instructional Technology Trainer for her district providing training and technology integration support for campus and district staff, faculty and administrators. For the past three years, Carol has served as the Campus Technology Integration Specialist at Fairmont Junior High in Deer Park Independent School District. In this position, Carol provides integration support and training to the students, staff, faculty, and administrators at the campus and district level. In addition, Carol is an online Math instructor for Aventa Learning and K12. The Texas Computer Education Association (TCEA) named Carol the Classroom Teacher of the Year for her innovative and creative use of technology to create a 24/7 virtual classroom using her classroom website. Carol has presented at school districts throughout Texas as well as state and local conferences on a variety of technology integration topics. Her article on the use of websites as an instructional tool was recently published in the TechEdge Magazine. In February 2011, her article, Lessons Learning In a 1:1 Classroom, was published by TechEdge. The article will be republished in ISTE‘s Learning and Leading magazine. She was named Fairmont Junior High’s Teacher of the Year for the 2011-2012 school year. Carol is passionate about the positive impact that technology has on student achievement. Her presentations are packed with real-life solutions, quality resources, and humor. She has an ability to connect with her audience and motivate them to take technology integration to a higher quality level.

As I have done in previous months, I begin winding down the 30 Days With the iPad series by listing out my five biggest criticisms from the experience.

The iPad 2 itself starts at $500, but by the time I got done purchasing the apps and peripherals necessary for the iPad to replace my PC, the price tag was quite a bit higher.

My 64GB iPad contains tons of sensitive data, and provides easy access to my online file storage, email, and social networks. I need security in place to protect my data and prevent unauthorized access into my iPad.

It may be cheating when trying to see if the iPad can replace a PC, but there are some legitimate uses for remote desktop tools, so today I am taking a look at connecting to a remote PC from the iPad.

The iPad is primarily a mobile device, but I do most of my work sitting at my desk, so I want to set the iPad up with a full keyboard and external monitor just like I do with my notebook.

I don't print much personally, but based on reader feedback printing from the iPad is a burning question that requires some attention. Today I take a look at the options for getting docs from your iPad onto a physical piece of paper.

For the past several months, I’ve been torn between Evernote and OneNote. The benefits of my premium Evernote account was clear but OneNote kept calling me back. I even left OneNote for those months, determined to fall in love with Evernote as so many others seem to have done. It was no use. I never felt comfortable in my Evernote “skin.” So, yesterday I opened back up my OneNote program and instantly felt as if I’d stepped into a comfortable robe. It just felt right.

We're still a few days from a final verdict on whether the iPad can fill the shoes of my Windows 7 PC for me personally, but regardless of how it works on an individual level I'm not sure the iPad can replace PCs in a business environment.

The rear-facing camera is relatively worthless, but the front-facing camera on the iPad 2 enables FaceTime video chat, and more productive use of the iPad for video conferencing.

With the iPad, the only legitimate way to get apps is through the Apple App Store, but there are a few aspects of the app buying experience that could use some polish.

The iPad can perform most of the functions of a PC--Web surfing, email, word processing, and such--but how does it compare with a PC when it comes to the very important task of playing games?

Most of the time I rely on my home wireless network, or I can find a Wi-Fi hotspot, but today I am checking out how the iPad 2 performs using a tethered 3G wireless connection shared from an iPhone 4 personal hotspot.
