Carol Mortensen has nearly twenty-three years of educational experience. She began as a
substitute teacher as she worked toward her degree. Upon graduation, Carol began teaching middle school Math and Algebra I and served as the technology liaison for her campus. She served as a teacher for 16 years and was lucky to have taught at Hillcrest Middle School, a 1:1 campus where every student was issued a laptop computer. She also worked as an Instructional Technology Trainer for her district providing training and technology integration support for campus and district staff, faculty and administrators.
For the past three years, Carol has served as the Campus Technology Integration Specialist at Fairmont Junior High in Deer Park Independent School District. In this position, Carol provides integration support and training to the students, staff, faculty, and administrators at the campus and district level. In addition, Carol is an online Math instructor for Aventa Learning and K12.
The Texas Computer Education Association (TCEA) named Carol the Classroom Teacher of the Year for her innovative and creative use of technology to create a 24/7
virtual classroom using her classroom website. Carol has presented at school districts throughout Texas as well as state and local conferences on a variety of technology integration topics. Her article on the use of websites as an instructional tool was recently published in the TechEdge Magazine. In February 2011, her article, Lessons Learning In a 1:1 Classroom, was published by TechEdge. The article will be republished in ISTE‘s Learning and Leading magazine. She was named Fairmont Junior High’s Teacher of the Year for the 2011-2012 school year.
Carol is passionate about the positive impact that technology has on student achievement. Her presentations are packed with real-life solutions, quality resources, and humor. She has an ability to connect with her audience and motivate them to take technology integration to a higher quality level.

"A Grandmother's Wish" Fundraiser | MyWeb4Ed | Scoop.it
Carol Mortensen's insight:

I love this little boy - maybe it is his twinkling eyes or mischievous grin. Maybe it is because he is my daughter’s son and an extension of my own precious child.  My heart breaks that I cannot cure Zak, to make things better, to ease the pain, to make his heart strong.  So, I do what I can do which is to love Zak with all of my heart and to help ease the financial burdens that this life-saving heart transplant brings to his family.  Mother’s Day is May 12th and my birthday is May 15th.  I do not wish for flowers or dinner out.  No perfume or candy.  Instead, my wish is for Zak to get better.  Please help me fill in the hearts for 150 wishes granted.

Please help me help my grandson by donating $1 or more to COTA in Honor of Zak M at www.cotaforzakm.com.

The leading independent publisher of award-winning, great value software. Download our web design, photo editing, desktop publishing and graphics software now.
Carol Mortensen's insight:

I am very impressed with these Serif products.  PagePlus x6 makes amazing newsletters, flyers, etc. easily.  As a teacher, this is a great way to make and publish parent newsletters, create cute logos, and a varitey of other great options.

Serif DrawPlus x6 is a rival to Fireworks which I've used for years.  However, I'm excited about the possiblities that DrawPlus offers in terms of things I use the most as an educator publishing educational content to the web, specifically, cutouts, drawings, and banners.

There is a free download so you can check it out yourself and I believe it's well worth the time!  Take a look!

Carol Mortensen's insight:

With Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) and Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT) becoming the norm in schools everywhere, this program is a great addition to the resources to take advantage of the technology.  It's 100% safe and very simple.  Imagine the benefit in reminding students of upcoming tests and projects due dates.  One big plus is the ability to allow parents to opt in to receive messages, too!  Students benefit from the reminders and you spend less time searching for kids work and more time doing what you should be doing....teaching!

Curate Web content to make your own topic bags. Publish and share your expertise. Bagging is teaching and learning.
Carol Mortensen's insight:

While I prefer the visual look of Symbaloo (www.symbalooedu.com), BagTheWeb does offer an great way to gather resources and bookmark them for yourself.  They also offer a unique way to share them out with students.  Students can also collect their own bags for their courses and projects.  You can easily share your bags of resources out on your blog or webpages for students to use and that is a huge plus!  It's also very easy to add items to your bags!  Another timesaver and we know how valuable that is!

Symbaloo has finally done it!  They've updated their dashboard for folks like me with over 80 webmixes!  It's so much better!  If you haven't tried Symbaloo, please take a look at it.  It's great for your own organization!  And, consider using it to help your students get organized, as well.  What is great is that their updates to their Symbaloo webmixes will be available for them no matter where they are accessed.  The students can easily move back and forth between school and home, even a friend's house, to access their favorite sites, research materials, videos, and many other items.

Thank you, Symbaloo, for listening and for making it SO much better!
