Mark Gillingham's curator insight, March 12, 2013 3:56 PM

Thinking of using a MOOC for your students or yourself? Think about the limitations that are usual but not necessarily forced in the typical MOOC and break into groups. Although many drop out of MOOCs, many do because they didn't find a suitable group or didn't think to look for one.

48 iPad Apps for Teaching and Learning Geography / Earth Science

48 iPad Apps for Teaching and Learning Geography / Earth Science | MyEdu&PLN | Scoop.it

"After a year or two of tinkering and experimenting with apps for teaching / learing Geography, I have (finally) compiled this list of what I deem to be the most useful iPad apps for teaching Geography. I have not rated any of them, or offered any kind of review. I have merely inserted a screenshot or two and a link to the App Store. The discerning down-loader is urged to consult the ratings and reviews for each of these before buying and downloading them. I like them, and I am sure that you and your students will too."

Convenient and moneysaving, but can it really replace what has worked for years?

The digital generation can benefit from its familiarity but the increase in tech also leads to disuse of important skills such as handwriting and otherwise independent thinking and problemsolving.

Nat Sones's curator insight, March 21, 2013 8:57 AM

Higher education can't fight smartphones in the classroom any more. If you can't beat them, join them, say educators.

Nat Sones's comment, March 21, 2013 8:58 AM
You have to use the tools of today. Does that mean you become slaves to them? Of course not. But minds are changing, just as times are. We must educate people in any way we can - and if that means (judicious) use of mobile, then so be it...at least, to me..

Mary Perfitt-Nelson's curator insight, March 2, 2013 9:02 PM

Just finished chapter 8 in High Impact Instruction by Jim Knight.   To summarize:

Cooperative learning is any structured, sytematic learning activity in which groups of learners work together to achieve a common goal.  It is a high impact strategy because it:

ensures engagement

facilitates formative assessment

facilitates differentiated instruction

allows students to collaboratively construct knowledge

develops students' communication skills

prepares students for life after school

It is most successful when teachers:

understand learning structure

create positive interdependence

teach expectations

teach social skills

determine optimum makeup of groups

manage time successfully

use an attention signal

Five learning structures that are easy"

turn to your neighbor

think, pair, share
