Carmenne K. Thapliyal's curator insight, May 7, 2013 3:43 AM

This article puts forth what it calls a 'theory' to 'model the psychological reasons people play video games'. It does make for an interesting read and will probably even serve in giving teachers solid reasons to encourage students' gaming endeavours. This article puts forth however a subjective point of view and is not a result of scientific research.

Ryan Craig: Three Ways Online Learning Hits The Jackpot | WiredAcademic

Ryan Craig: Three Ways Online Learning Hits The Jackpot | WiredAcademic | MyEdu&PLN | Scoop.it

The traditional classroom is like a blackjack table.  You must visit the facility in order to participate.  Sessions start when the leader says so.  There are relatively complex rules in order to participate.  The session proceeds in a manner that is not individually tailored to your preferences.  And sticking with it requires a focus on the long-term goal (i.e., earning a degree, or winning back your money).

Enter digital technology.  As in gambling, technology is important in higher education not in and of itself, but because it enables three developments that will make learning much more effective, and perhaps addictive.

Understanding personal learning networks: Their structure, content and the networking skills to optimally use them

Understanding personal learning networks: Their structure, content and the networking skills to optimally use them | MyEdu&PLN | Scoop.it

Networking is a key skill in professional careers, supporting the individual’s growth and learning. However, little is known about how professionals intentionally manage the connections in their personal networks and which factors influence their decisions in connecting with others for the purpose of learning. In this article, we present a model of personal professional networking for creating a personal learning network, based on an investigation through a literature study, semi–structured interviews and a survey.

Creativity is about being present and aware of the potential that exists.

Mary Perfitt-Nelson's curator insight, April 20, 2013 12:01 PM

Creativity does come from divergent thinking that is unencumbered by the culling of ideas that comes with more analytical thinking.  There is a time and a place for both!

Creativity and problem solving are inseparable. And they take time, requiring perseverance and a willingness to take risks. All of these are qualities of innovation.

To set questions you just turn the sections on or off and the app chooses questions from these at random.

Free Technology for Teachers: Ten Good Video Sources for Science Students and Teachers | MyEdu&PLN | Scoop.it

"One of the great things about teaching today is the wealth of educational videos that are available on the web. No longer do we have to flip through catalogs, order a VHS cassette, wait for it to arrive, and hope that it is as good as the catalog made it sound. Now we can quickly access and screen educational videos. In fact, there is so much available that the challenge is sifting through it all."

Richard Byrne has put together a great list of 10 websites that provide excellent videos for science. Sites include:

* The Spangler Effect from Steve Spangler Science (demonstrations of science experiments)

* Gooru - a website that has been mentioned in this Scoop.it. "Gooru is a service that aims to provide teachers and students with an extensive collection of videos, interactive displays, documents, diagrams, and quizzes for learning about topics in math and science." If you have not taken the opportunity to check out Gooru it is worth your time.

* MIT Tech TV which has thousands of videos.

More information on these sites and seven additional sites is available in the post!
