Learning no longer has to stop

Learning no longer has to stop | MyEdu&PLN | Scoop.it
we are often forced to ask students to put their learning on hold … if not stop it all together while they compete for resources.
That is a topic for next year.  STOP

Google Classroom opens its doors to all teachers today.

Google Classroom opens its doors to all teachers today. | MyEdu&PLN | Scoop.it
“ As of now Google Classroom is available to all Google Apps for Education (GAFE) users. Classroom is a tool within the GAFE that allows teachers to set up different classes, set projects, assign homework to groups and grade them all within a single space. Classroom also records student grades and progress. It should be a worthwhile assessment tool once you have begun using it with your students for a couple of months. Remember, what you are using at the moment is essentially Classroom 1.0 and as such it is quite limited in it's functionality and flexibility, but so was everything in Google Apps when it was first released and Google have certainly demonstrated a commitment to upgrade and enhance their products continually. It will take you all of about 2 minutes to set up your class and get cooking so all I can suggest is give it a shot and see where it takes you. You certainly won't be wasting your time fro my brief encounter with it so far. Here are a couple of resources and links to get you started and I'd love to hear about your experiences thus far. ”

Using Dialogue Circles to Support Classroom Management

Using Dialogue Circles to Support Classroom Management | MyEdu&PLN | Scoop.it
Promoting Positive BehaviorDialogue circles are gatherings in which all participants sit in a circle facing each other to facilitate open, direct communication.Dialogue circles provide a safe, supportive space where all school community members can talk about sensitive topics, work through differences, and build consensus. At Glenview Elementary School, circles are part of a program called Restorative Justice, which is aimed at building collaboration, respect, and positive behavior among students. The circles were implemented in classrooms slowly, and after two years, there was a marked improvement in classroom behavior. “”

"(...) There are two important conclusions from the research: 1. Even for the sole purpose for which lectures may be effective – the transmission of information – the 50 minute lecture needs to be well organized, with frequent opportunities for student questions and discussion. (Bligh provides excellent suggestions on how to do this in his book.) 2. For all other important learning activities, such as developing critical thinking, deep understanding, and application of knowledge – the kind of skills needed in a digital age – lectures are ineffective. Other forms of teaching and learning – such as opportunities for discussion and student activities – are necessary. (...)"

This is a really compelling article that challenged me to reflect on the challenges of leadership.

Miklos Szilagyi's curator insight, August 22, 3:25 AM

It's a very intersting topic and mostly I undersign it... though it's culture-dependent too... the context, the connotation you might have by reading e.g. this title... that  might  count too...  coming from a region where story-telling might be a substitute of lots of things, among other things, lying, or - as one of my cross-cultural researcher friend said once - saying "no", I have some reserves... but even in the Anerican culture, whether the executives of Enron e.g. weren't (surely not authentic but) excellent story-tellers? If you are with me on that...

Of course, the message goes better into the deep with emotions and what is better than the story-telling like emotion-vehicle? of course... but to say that the future leader's main characteristics are courage and story-telling capacity is, I don't know, IMHO, not only simplistic but simply not enough...

Starting by the main point what story he/she should so well and authentically tell? What the content is of this famous story? I would start here when drawing this profile... and yes the sellability, the motivation-power, the capacity of  being able to attract the followers, to be able to align their energy are also important but somehow the content of all these has a certain priority in my mind...

S'Marie Young, CPCC's curator insight, August 22, 3:00 PM

This article highlights some of the qualities successful leaders of the present and future must cultivate, such as courage, resiliency, permeability and transparency. These qualities create a powerful presence, one that people can trust.

Presence is knowing yourself, your values, passions and goals, and being able to communicate them authentically. Presence is also being empathetic to the aspirations of others.
