Why Smart Cities Need Cloud Services

Why Smart Cities Need Cloud Services | MyCity | Scoop.it
As municipal needs get more sophisticated, more cities turn to cloud services.
aseubersAtos's insight:

Cities in the cloud? Well, not yet. But cloud in the city is essential; cloud-based services are vital to modern urban development and infrastructure.

This piece looks at how cloud is the backbone of the modern city and the key to smart city development. Without it, you cannot design or build a modern city, or retrofit existing urban structures. With the cloud, you can not only integrate the complex mesh of services you need to deliver; you can test, optimize and critical, pay for them. Life in the cities – and certainly transport, government, education and all other complex action – increasingly depends on cloud provision. All urban governments must ensure theirs is secure, enables flexible working between public and private operators, and can drive active citizen engagement.

Unaffordable cities: Singapore workers tread water on millionaires' island

Unaffordable cities: Singapore workers tread water on millionaires' island | MyCity | Scoop.it
With 17% of city state's residents worth S$1m, those who serve, drive and treat them may as well live on another planet ("In 2001, Singapore was ranked 97th in the list of world's most expensive cities.
aseubersAtos's insight:

As cities grow and thrive and become a new kind of economic powerhouse, the gaps between rich and poor can become chasms. Yet we need people, of all kinds and all economic bands, in order for our cities to continue to grow. This article illustrates this Catch-22 in a very human way, showing us a story from a highly-pressured city, Singapore, of how a person can become unable to afford their urban life - and therefore how the city threatens to undermine itself. If such trends do not cease, we run the risk of ghettoisation and of the failure of urbanisation - and perhaps, the stalling of our society. The answer is of course to support citizens more, engage them more in processes of governance, and deliver services and infrastructure in a more flexible and affordable way. We need people to make cities work!
