In many countries, the concept of reducing food miles has caught on with consumers, and food retailers and restaurants are scrambling to provide customers local, ‘climate-friendly’ alternatives to imported foodstuffs.

 

"A study, Climate Change and Food Systems, published in the 2012 Annual Review of Environment and Resources takes a ‘food systems’ approach to calculating emissions that account for every aspect of food production and distribution. This includes the direct emissions of growing crops and raising livestock; the indirect emissions of food production due to land cover change; manufacturing fertiliser; and storing, transporting and refrigerating food."

Author Summary

The determinants of influenza spatial spread are not fully understood, in part due to the insufficient geographic resolution of incidence data. We address this using a fine-grained private sector electronic health database of insurance claims data from health encounters in the US during 2009. We used physician diagnoses codes to generate a dataset of the weekly number of office visits with diagnosed influenza-like illness for 271 US locations. Applying statistical and mathematical models to these disease data, we find that the main autumn wave of the 2009 pandemic in the US was remarkably spatially structured. Its onset in the South Eastern US precipitated a slow radial spread that took 3 months to diffuse across the country. These patterns were replicated by models that included short-distance spatial transmission between nearby locations and increased transmission rates when school was in session. Our results contrast with previous modelling studies that indicated that environmental factors, population sizes, and long-distance transmission events (air traffic) are major determinants in disease spread. We conclude that the 2009 pandemic autumn wave spread slowly because transmissibility of the influenza virus was relatively low and children (who travel long distance far less than adults) were the predominant sources of infection.

I cannot figure out why there isn’t a greater backlash from the U.S. citizen about our nation’s ethanol policy. While the world’s food and agricultural journalists are in a constant toot about food waste and how to prevent it, they don’t seem to notice that we are wasting the production from some of the best farmland in the world, the American Midwest, by burning massive amounts of corn for fueling our vehicles.

Summary

Intraspecific genetic incompatibilities prevent the assembly of specific alleles into single genotypes and influence genome- and species-wide patterns of sequence variation. A common incompatibility in plants is hybrid necrosis, characterized by autoimmune responses due to epistatic interactions between natural genetic variants. By systematically testing thousands of F1 hybrids of Arabidopsis thaliana strains, we identified a small number of incompatibility hot spots in the genome, often in regions densely populated by nucleotide-binding domain and leucine-rich repeat (NLR) immune receptor genes. In several cases, these immune receptor loci interact with each other, suggestive of conflict within the immune system. A particularly dangerous locus is a highly variable cluster of NLR genes, DM2, which causes multiple independent incompatibilities with genes that encode a range of biochemical functions, including NLRs. Our findings suggest that deleterious interactions of immune receptors limit the combinations of favorable disease resistance alleles accessible to plant genomes.

ABSTRACT

Deep sequencing of RNAs produced by Zaire ebolavirus (EBOV) or the Angola strain of Marburgvirus (MARV-Ang) identified novel viral and cellular mechanisms that diversify the coding and noncoding sequences of viral mRNAs and genomic RNAs. We identified previously undescribed sites within the EBOV and MARV-Ang mRNAs where apparent cotranscriptional editing has resulted in the addition of non-template-encoded residues within the EBOV glycoprotein (GP) mRNA, the MARV-Ang nucleoprotein (NP) mRNA, and the MARV-Ang polymerase (L) mRNA, such that novel viral translation products could be produced. Further, we found that the well-characterized EBOV GP mRNA editing site is modified at a high frequency during viral genome RNA replication. Additionally, editing hot spots representing sites of apparent adenosine deaminase activity were found in the MARV-Ang NP 3′-untranslated region. These studies identify novel filovirus-host interactions and reveal production of a greater diversity of filoviral gene products than was previously appreciated.


IMPORTANCE 

This study identifies novel mechanisms that alter the protein coding capacities of Ebola and Marburg virus mRNAs. Therefore, filovirus gene expression is more complex and diverse than previously recognized. These observations suggest new directions in understanding the regulation of filovirus gene expression.
