LinkedIn Finished Renovating Its Empire State Building Offices And Gave Us A Tour | Better know and better use Social Media today (facebook, twitter...) | Scoop.it

Just over a year ago, we visited LinkedIn's New York offices.

Many of the careers site's sales and marketing staff are based there (the tech staff is at the HQ in Mountain View, Calif.)

At the time, only 100 people worked at LinkedIn New York. The company was still refurbishing the office.

Today, the redecorating is mostly done and the office has 280 staffers and is still hiring — its marketing solutions unit is clearly booming. (The company has about 3,500 staff overall.)

This is what it's like to work at LinkedIn in New York.

Twitter Profile Photos Options For Every Personality

Twitter Profile Photos Options For Every Personality | Better know and better use Social Media today (facebook, twitter...) | Scoop.it

When creating a Twitter profile, there are enough bio do’s and don’tsto make your head spin. It’s amazing, really – especially considering how limited the space is. But the brevity of it is what makes it SO important to get right. Every word will stand out – so will every typo.

It’s kind of nerve-wracking to think about it that way, hmm?

Before you fret over word choice though, we have some (more) helpful info to cram in your overburdened mind – and this stuff is kind of fun. We’re going to show you some popular Twitter profile photo options, which you can copy, ignore, relate to or laugh at. It’s Friday after all, you deserve a little mindcation (vacation for your mind. Yes, some words should not be combined.)

Vine Announces Trending Hashtags, Further Antagonizing Haters | Better know and better use Social Media today (facebook, twitter...) | Scoop.it

There are those on Twitter who love to hate Vines. They have good reason, we guess. Vines are new and (sometimes) annoying – and everyone is talking about them like they’re the best thing since . . . the last best thing everyone hated.

But Vine is going strong in spite of the haters. And it just announced a new feature that will make those you love Vines go ga ga a-new, while making detractors gag: trending hashtags.

Time to #VineItUp.

Smart advertisers are turning their attention to social media these days – and Twitter should top that list. Metrics to Determine Social Media Value to Bottom Line | Social Media Today | Better know and better use Social Media today (facebook, twitter...) | Scoop.it

With customers choosing the online medium to research and purchase products, a viable social media presence is on top of the to-do list for marketers.

Consider this: There were 490 million unique YouTube users per month in 2012, Facebook reported 1.2 billion users worldwide and the average amount of tweets per day adds up to 190 million.

If marketers don't approach social media right, they’re just annoying people. As long as marketers think that tracking social media ROI is an impossible task, they’re going nowhere. But what are the metrics that assure social media success?

A woman in Belfast has illustrated the power of Twitter by using the social network to find her mother, who suffers from Alzheimer’s Disease, after she had been missing for more than nine hours.

Google+ Tips And Shortcuts: Increase Your Effectiveness [Infographic]

Google+ Tips And Shortcuts: Increase Your Effectiveness [Infographic] | Better know and better use Social Media today (facebook, twitter...) | Scoop.it
These tips and shortcuts will help you increase your effectiveness on Google+. There are many extra benefits for being on Google+. This article lists some.

You might be asking yourself why you need these tips and shortcuts since you don’t have time to be on Google+ in the first place. I mean, you’ve already got enough social sites to keep up with, right? If you have a website, and you are trying to increase your traffic, Google+ should not be the social site you let slide. The reason can be summed up in one word – Google – and that means search. If nothing else, that is the reason you need to be there.

Let me just give you one example of what I’m talking about. If you are on Google+, you can sign up for Google Authorship (if you haven’t already done this, I suggest you do it today, just follow that link). We just wrote about this last week in an article called Google Authorship & It’s Insane Impact On Website Traffic. Bottom line, you’ll get to have your avatar show up in the search results on Google, which will give you a huge bump in web traffic. Only 9% of tech blogs have taken advantage of Google Authorship, which leaves a huge opportunity for you if you haven’t implemented it.

Social Media vs. Community Management – What’s the Difference? | Better know and better use Social Media today (facebook, twitter...) | Scoop.it

Two trendy job titles have emerged in the marketing world that evoke equal parts reverence and confusion. Many businesses who haven’t already hired either a Social Media Manager or a Community Manager are scrambling to post these openings on their job boards as social media becomes a more integral aspect of their marketing mix. Unfortunately, these two starkly different roles are typically seen as interchangeable, leading to role confusion and strategic mishaps. Here is a breakdown of what both roles really are.

The Facebook Problem: Why We Need To Re-Think Facebook Marketing

It is a common conversation in businesses and marketing departments across the world: Facebook. The social network has become the creme de creme of marketing plans, business seminars, college courses, and entrepreneurs. There are thousands (perhaps millions) of articles written about Facebook each week- some claiming it has changed the way they do business, others saying it has been a flop and a waste of money. Behind it all is one simple idea: marketing. It is a key piece many have seemed to forgotten as they make their way into the exciting, confusing, and heated world of Facebook. It is also something I like to call “the Facebook Problem.”

Today, Facebook offers businesses several ways to market themselves. The first option is to create a Facebook page about their business and use it to blast out brand messaging via posts to users who like their page. This is an option that many businesses have chosen and has become the talking point across all professionals. The second option is to run paid advertising via Facebook ads. These ads can drive on-site (to generate likes for the business’ Facebook page or engagement with prior page posts) or off-site (to drive traffic to a webpage off of Facebook). Looking at it this way, the opportunities on Facebook are rather black and white, though each one offers a complex set of opportunities and strategic implications. It is one site online (with a tremendous amount of traffic) brands can use in their marketing plans. Sounds simple enough, right? Wrong. This is where the Facebook Problem comes into play.

Using Facebook for the Power of Good |

When the San Francisco Architectural Heritage recently announced that San Francisco’s Palace Hotel had removed the iconic Maxfield Parrish painting from the Pied Piper Bar and Grill in anticipation of a planned sale at auction both locals and patrons were in dismay.

According to San Francisco Architectural Heritage, “Positioned prominently above the oak bar, ‘The Pied Piper of Hamelin’ has been the centerpiece of the establishment since the Palace reopened in 1909 after the city’s great earthquake and fire”.

The Palace stated, “It is no longer practical for the hotel to display an original work of this value and cultural significance in a public area.” They also said that the owners had engaged with Christie’s in New York City to oversee the sale of the piece.

4 Social Media Marketing Lessons From the Top Colleges

4 Social Media Marketing Lessons From the Top Colleges | Better know and better use Social Media today (facebook, twitter...) | Scoop.it

Harvard University’s official Facebook page currently boasts over 2,437,000 ‘Likes.’ Lest that sound like just another big number, consider that the university has only 22,800 students. Still, of course, Harvard is a widely recognized name.

But so are Reebok, Miller Lite and The Avett Brothers (all of whom are quite popular with college-aged Americans and trail Harvard in Facebook followers).

Not surprisingly, Harvard sits atop a list of the ‘Top 100 Social Media Colleges,’ compiled and maintained by StudentAdvisor.com. After all, Facebook got its start there. They’re joined at the top by other schools like Columbia and Stanford, the University of Kentucky, Louisiana State, and John Hopkins University.

At the beginning of this month, Facebook teased everyone in its announcement to “come see our new home on Android.” Rumors abounded about what exactly the public was going to see on April 4th. Social Media Listening Is Sound Business Practice

Social Media Listening Is Sound Business Practice | Better know and better use Social Media today (facebook, twitter...) | Scoop.it

How many times have you had something, whether it was in your personal or professional life, go wrong because of poor communication? If you are honest, there are likely more than you would like to admit. Having those kinds of experiences doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with you. In fact, it’s just more evidence of just how human you and the people you communicate with are. You see although we are given two ears and one mouth rarely are they used in the right proportion. The results are often something you have to clean up but could have been completely avoided had you, or the other person, slowed down just long enough to really listen.
