It’s been a huge year for social media, particularly in marketing, but what’s on the horizon for the next 12 months?

 

Content marketing has quickly established itself as an important tool for brands, and that trend is expected to develop next year. Images will continue to outperform words for engagement metrics, and hashtags are going to become a leading search tool. Mobile marketing is likely to surpass other forms of online advertising, and social media will become an essential aspect of all business strategies.

 

Social Media and SEO Integration – In the past, the understanding was that social media was separate from SEO. Google and other search engines are now taking into account social media activity to generate search engine results, making the merger more important for small business owners. This means that more social media avenues and campaigns should yield improved SEO goals and vice-versa. While these are just a few of the trends going forward into 2014, they are ones that can be easily ignored by the competition.

They are also easy to implement and not costly. It just requires a small change in strategy and a commitment to include new technologies and old know-how into a social media marketing plan that can yield better sales in 2014.

Twitter is about to launch an app update that will see its direct messaging service behave more like an instant chat one.

In what looks like a move to grab users away from the likes of Whatsapp, the microblogging site plans to streamline access to direct messages across its web and mobile platforms.

In two tweets, Twitter Support said on 19 July: "Over the next few weeks, we're rolling out an update that makes deleting DMs more consistent across web and mobile. We're also making an update to the Twitter iPhone and Android apps that will allow you to access your entire DM history." Currently, if you delete a DM on the mobile app, it's still likely to show up on the desktop version. On top of that, only the most recent conversations are visible in the mobile app, meaning it's probably not your first port of call for picking up conversations with friends regularly.

Stuart Turnbull, 42, a writer in England, once tried to shut down his Facebook account after realizing that he was spending too much time sharing posts and comments.

Very useful infographic summarizing the problems with content that isn't being shared and how to solve that problem.  I like the good practical tips for creating more "emotionally charged" content.   The other main points:


  • Lack of emotional appeal – people share content that generates curiosity, amazement, interest, astonishment, uncertainty, admiration and humor.
  • Not “Share Worthy” – people want to share it, it’s easy to share, it provides value, and it’s going to draw attention to those who share it.
  • Bad Timing – find the times of the day, week, season or event that the content is in demand and popular.
  • Poor Design – the layout, colors and visual appeal matters when it comes to sharable content. An investment in design is an investment in the likelihood it will be shared.
  • Poor Distribution – this is probably the one we see least deployed… distribute and promote your content across sites where it’s going to reach a large audience.
