'The voters of Scotland seem to have fallen in love with Nicola Sturgeon; she is adored' | My Scotland | Scoop.it

rship LIKE most of the journalists glued to their Twitter feeds last week, I thought Labour's Jim Murphy did pretty well in the Scottish leaders TV debates.

Peter A Bell's curator insight, April 12, 8:12 AM

Iain Macwhirter is rather arrogantly dismissive of the view, expressed on Twitter and elsewhere, of Jim Murphy as "Creepy Jim". It doesn't seem to have occurred to Mr Macwhirter that this epithet may have been earned. His attitude seems to be that, because this is a view expressed on Twitter, it has no value. But the fact is that Jim Murphy really does come across as exceedingly creepy.

Shrill, swivel-eyed and angry is not a good look for any politician. And talking in slogans, sound-bites and cliches may have the advantage of making his material easy to memorise, but it creates the impression of a man with no ideas and a political philosophy that is no more than a rag-bag of tabloid headlines, ingrained bigotry and unabashed expediency.

Sometimes Twitter simply tells it like it is.

UK would not bail out a fiscally autonomous Scotland

UK would not bail out a fiscally autonomous Scotland | My Scotland | Scoop.it
THE UK Government has dismissed claims it would have to plug a multi-billion pound shortfall in Scotland's finances if all tax and spending decisions were devolved to Holyrood.

Peter A Bell's curator insight, April 14, 12:05 PM

Did anybody suggest that the UK might be asked to "bail out" fiscally autonomous Scotland? Does the very suggestion not imply a contradiction in terms?

Why would such a "bail out" be required anyway? There is always some dispute about precise figures, but there can be no doubt that Scotland's fiscal position is at least as strong as that of the rest of the UK (rUK). If this were not so, wouldn't we be seeing some signs of this "bail out" now?

Which is not to say that Scotland's fiscal health is flawless. After 300 years of political union and decades of economic mismanagement by successive UK Governments, there are undoubtedly issue that need to be addressed. All full fiscal autonomy (FFA) means is that we get to address those issues in our own way.

And what Alex Salmond was pointing out is quite correct. Regardless of whether it is the mockery of the Smith recommendations or genuine FFA, neither side is going to sign up to a deal which is seriously detrimental. That's just not how deals work. What is being hinted at here is that a settlement would be imposed on Scotland that was specifically designed to harm Scotland's economy. It is the same threat of economic warfare that we heard all through the referendum campaign.

The problem with any devolution settlement that the British state is likely to offer is that it will be contrived to ensure that Scotland cannot take significant measures to grow its economy. Because economic divergence would massively strengthen the case for independence. To keep the union together and pander to London and the SE, Westminster must ensure that a tight rein is kept on Scotland's economy.

For all the pious talk and thinly veiled threats and florid scare stories from British politicians, what they really fear is that Scotland will successfully follow a different path on economic and social policy and so expose the lie that there is "no other way" but austerity.
