Scottish Labour "Sham" on Fracking | Scottish National Party

Scottish Labour "Sham" on Fracking | Scottish National Party | My Scotland | Scoop.it

The Scottish National Party has described Scottish Labour’s policy on fracking as a “sham” as the vast majority of Scottish Labour MPs abstained on a key fracking vote in the House of Commons today.

They abstained on the moratorium on fracking for 18-30 months in today’s Infrastructure Bill. Scottish Labour’s position on the vote was unclear following a BBC Radio interview on BBC Good Morning Scotland on Saturday with their spokesperson, Sarah Boyack MSP, who repeatedly refused to set out how they will vote.

Willie Rennie is not very clever. He demonstrates this pretty much every time he speaks. And, let's face it, a clever person doesn't get themselves lumbered with the job of fronting the Liberal Democrats in Scotland. Especially at a time when the party is in cahoots with the Tories.

Not being clever, it is always advisable, that Willie Rennie remain silent. Unfortunately, he is not clever enough to realise this. He is much too pathetically desperate for the attention of the media to know when to keep his mouth shut. And so we find him staunchly defending the latest round of superficial constitutional tinkering that the British parties are trying to pass off as "home rule" for Scotland.

If Rennie was just a little bit cleverer than he is, it might occur to him that he represents the Liberal Democrats - the party which has asserted for itself the right to define (and redefine) "home rule". If he was as clever as he really needs to be, it might even have dawned on him that somebody was likely to ask him to compare the "home rule" that he is defending with his own party's definition of "home rule", as lately set out in "The Scrolls of Ming".

Not that anybody from the British media will be asking such awkward questions, of course. Their unenviable task is to try and make Wille Rennie look cleverer than he is.
