That the possible permutations of power politics within a hung UK parliament are complex is hardly a startling revelation. No more striking than the idea that power comes in many forms and can be exercised in myriad ways. What it all boils down to is the simple fact that the future is unknowable. Certainly in the kind of detail that Alex Bell touches upon whilst barely denting the meniscus on the deep, dark pool of possible scenarios.

Such speculation can be fun, even if ultimately pointless. It's a game of "Just Suppose" with virtually no limits and only the rules that are arbitrarily adopted by individual players. It takes us nowhere.

When faced with such profound unknowables, there's basically two ways to go. You can tilt at them with your little lance as Alex Bell does. Or you can eschew the Quixotic in favour of the pragmatic. You can rail against your own powerlessness in the face of near-infinite complexity. Or you can accept your limitations and deal with what is knowable.

.Power is not everything. It can be readily argued that the most valuable commodity in politics is, not power, but options. For what possible value can power have if you lack the opportunity to exercise it? In fact, political power could well be defined as the possession of options. And political acumen as a capacity for creating and retaining options.

Is this not an area in which the SNP has proved itself particularly adept?

Time and time again the SNP has faced the power of the British state and come out at worst unscathed and, on the whole, much stronger, because at every turn the party has maintained its options. There has always been an alternative course of action regardless of how a particular situation played out.

I see no reason to doubt that the SNP will continue in this vain at Westminster and so deal adequately with the complex situations it will surely face.

When betting on a player it is not necessary to know all the possible moves in the game, it is only necessary to know that player's record in playing the game. My money's on the SNP team.

Peter A Bell's curator insight, March 30, 8:50 AM

What makes anybody think a Labour majority is good thing? Some will respond that it is better than another Tory government. But there is no good reason to suppose that a Labour majority government will produce better outcomes for those impacted by Tory policies that British Labour is committed to continuing.

And it is totally misleading to suggest that it is a choice between a Labour majority government and a Tory government. There is a third way that should be eagerly embraced by every Labour voter, even if it is reviled by their party's leadership. A minority Labour government supported by the SNP is the ideal arrangement for those who are genuinely concerned about securing progressive change rather than partisan advantage.
