Peter A Bell's curator insight, May 26, 4:14 AM

It's not complicated. There will be a need for a centre right party in Scotland post-independence. The smarter Tories have twigged that now is a good time to stake out that ground. The difficulty will lie in convincing people that the autonomy of the new Scottish Conservative Party is genuine after so many decades of Scottish Tories loudly proclaiming their devotion to London rule.

The situation is rather more problematic for British Labour in Scotland. Not only do they have the same difficulty as their unionist allies, the task of persuading voters that the new Scottish Labour Party is really what it purports to be is made all the more onerous by the fact that British Labour in Scotland has basically been lying about this for decades. Arguably, nobody was more guilty in this regard than Jim Murphy.

Before British Labour in Scotland can become a Scottish Labour Party, it will first have to admit that it has been perpetrating a deception by posing in the guise of "Scottish Labour".

Rebranding British Labour in Scotland is a bigger ask for another reason. An autonomous Scottish Conservative Party will pretty much be occupying the same political ground that the Scottish Tories hold now. They will have to deal with developing a policy agenda that differentiates them from their counterparts in England. But the territory is there to be taken.

A new Scottish Labour Party would find itself in political limbo. The SNP has already laid claim to what should be its natural ground. Emulating British Labour's strategy of creating a policy overlap with the Tories in order to appeal to Middle England is obviously a non-starter. The Greens have the environmentalist left all sewn up. All that remains is to challenge the Scottish Socialist Party for the electorally infertile ground to the left of the SNP.

It doesn't look promising for the fledgling Scottish Labour Party. But then, neither does remaining bound to British Labour. Especially in circumstances where a Scottish Tory breakaway has served to further emphasise the distinctiveness of Scotland's political culture.

However, the biggest problem confronting both Labour and Conservatives is identical for both. It is the matter of personalities and personnel. Too many of the former too closely identified with the old British parties, and too few of the latter to provide a solid base on which to build the new Scottish parties.

Maybe it is complicated after all.
