Peter A Bell's curator insight, May 18, 8:02 AM

Instead of lashing out at Len McCluskey it might be a good idea if the likes of Murphy and Murray were to listen to what he is saying. But yet again we see British Labour in Scotland talking about listening and learning while doing precisely the opposite.

Murphy's answer to the pretendy wee party's travails is to dismiss all criticism and further entrench the cliques whose incompetence has brought brought British labour in Scotland to this pass. If Unite and other unions had their way, Murphy would not have been leader and the election campaign would almost certainly have been very different. It is unimaginable that the outcome could possibly have been worse with Neil Findlay at the helm.

Len McCluskey was among the voices of sanity trying to prevent the electoral disaster presided over by Jim Murphy and directed by the Project Fear retreads that he selected. McCluskey has been proved right in the most dramatic fashion. Murphy's response is to seek to reduce the influence of those who would have steered British Labour in Scotland away from the rocks and so increase the relative power of those who got it so massively wrong.

How can this possibly be justified? How can it be explained other than as an act of stunningly irrational spite? How can Murphy still be in a position to do this? It defies all logic.

Are we reaching the point where British Labour in Scotland simply has to be written off. Can they ever be relevant when the political terrain that they should have occupied has been so effectively claimed by the SNP? What vision can British Labour in Scotland offer the people of Scotland that can compete with the aspirational politics and principled pragmatism of the SNP?

Where can they move to in order to be distinctive when the ground to the right is owned by the Tories and the ground to the left is owned by the Scottish Greens and the SSP?

Is British Labour in Scotland facing extinction?
